FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team dropped the second game of its weekend series against Sacred Heart University by a 3-0 score on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks fall to 2-7-1 on the season with a 1-2-1 record in New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) play. The Pioneers improve to 5-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in league matches. The Hawks are back in action on Friday, Nov. 12 when Post comes to the Hilltop for a 4 p.m. game.
Neither team found the twine in the opening period as Sacred Heart held a 16-6 edge in shots on goal. Saint Anselm had two power play opportunities, but failed to convert with the extra skater.
The best scoring chance for the Hawks came with just under five minutes remaining in the period as sophomore
Abigail Blair (Grand Island, N.Y.) drove toward goal with numbers in the Hawks favor, firing a shot that was saved by
Frankie Sanchez. However, the rebound found senior
Erin Meyers (Saint Paul, Minn.) whose scoring chance was denied on the doorstep.
Sacred Heart capitalized twice on the power play in the second stanza as
Anna Klein knocked home a rebound chance in front, stemming from a point shot by
Alexa Ocel at 11:51 of the period.
Rachel DeLong added the second extra-skater tally at 16:19. A shot was sent on junior goaltender
Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.), who dove out in an attempt to freeze the puck. DeLong was able to complete the play by sending a wrister into the near empty net.
The Pioneers grabbed an insurance goal at 10:14 of the third period.
Kennedy Spiering fired a wrist shot in an odd-player rush by Kelley on the far post.
Sacred Heart out-shot Saint Anselm 39-15 for the game. The Hawks were scoreless on seven power play opportunities while the Pioneers were two-for-seven.
Kelley made 36 saves in the contest including all 16 in the first period and 17 of 19 in the second. Sanchez posted a 15-save shutout for the Pioneers.
