PREVIEW: Men's basketball welcomes Southern N.H. to the Hilltop on Tuesday

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team will renew its rivalry with Southern New Hampshire University at home on Tuesday, Nov. 23 in a 7:30 p.m. tip.

Saint Anselm has opened the 2021-22 season with an 0-2 record, falling to Bentley last week before dropping a 98-62 contest at Franklin Pierce over the weekend.

Southern New Hampshire has opened with a 4-0 record for the fourth time in five seasons, most recently defeating Post by a convincing 85-62 margin over the weekend.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Saint Anselm posted a 92-68 loss on Saturday against Franklin Pierce University. Senior Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) led Saint Anselm with 15 points. Senior Chris Paul (Highland Mills, N.Y.) picked up his first double-double of the season, posting 14 points with 11 rebounds and four assists.
  • Off the bench against Franklin Pierce, senior Alonzo Jackson (Medford, Mass.) was five-for-five from the floor and made both free throws for 12 points in 20 minutes. He has 61 rejections in his career, ranking ninth all-time.
  • The last time Saint Anselm opened the year with an 0-2 record was in 2016-17. The Hawks would go on to claim a NE10 Championship that season, defeating SNHU on its home court by a 73-68 score.
  • Late in the 2019-20 season, Paul cracked the team's top 10 list for career free throws made (373), trailing ninth-place Patrick McCarthy '56 by just seven. The all-time record of 513 was established by Jim Moore '06 from 2003-06.
  • Paul has 15 career double-doubles, ranking 24th among active NCAA Division II student-athletes. Senior Gustav Suhr-Jessen (Virum, Denmark) is not far behind with 12 to his credit – he ranks 37th among student-athletes across the nation.
  • Tention has made 41.2% of his three-point basket attempts across a 60-game career on the Hilltop, ranking 11th all-time in team history.

PREVIEWING THE PENMEN

  • Southern New Hampshire is one of 55 teams in NCAA Division II without a defeat, carrying a 4-0 record into play on Tuesday against Saint Anselm.
  • The Penmen average just 10 turnovers per game, ranking second in the NE10, while the team's 107 three-point field goal attempts are also the second-most in the league. Matt Becht has put up 32 attempts from beyond the arc this season, leading the NE10.
  • Jacari Sanders is dishing out 6.2 assists per game so far in 2021-22, ranking third in the league and 16th in the nation. He is also producing 2.5 steals per contest, the second-most in the league.
  • SNHU has made 10 or more three-point field goals in three of its first four games – in the outlying game, the Penmen made five-of-seven attempts from beyond the arc against Bloomfield on Nov. 13.
  • The Penmen have steadily increased their field goal percentage in each of the four games, starting off by shooting 38.1% at Caldwell and, most recently, produced a season-high field goal percentage of 47.8% against Post at home.

ALL-TIME vs. SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE

  • The Penmen and Hawks have met 73 times since the first game on Nov. 27, 1977. Saint Anselm holds the narrow lead, 38-35, and has won each of the past five meetings and seven of the last eight since Feb. 21, 2017.
  • Then-New Hampshire College won 13 games in a row against Saint Anselm from Nov. 27, 1978 to Jan. 16, 1989, the longest streak of any team in the 73-game series.he last time the two teams met was Feb. 12, 2020 in what was Saint Anselm coach Keith Dickson's 1,000th career game. The Hawks overcame a 21-6 scoring run by the Penmen near the midpoint of the game, securing a 72-61 win in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
