PREVIEW: Men's basketball set for Saturday's tilt at Franklin Pierce

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team heads to Rindge, N.H. on Saturday for a 1 p.m. showdown with Franklin Pierce University.

Saint Anselm, the No. 12 team in NCAA Division II according to the D2SIDA Men's Basketball Division II Media Poll, posted an 89-79 loss to Bentley on Wednesday in the team's first intercollegiate game since the 2020 Northeast-10 Conference Championship.

Franklin Pierce has compiled a 1-2 record so far this season, defeating Jefferson on Sunday in between losses to Holy Family and California (Pa.). The Ravens have, notably, scored exactly 84 points in each of their three games so far in 2021-22.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Saint Anselm lost by 10 points to Bentley, the No. 25 team in the D2SIDA Media Poll, on Wednesday. The Hawks finished the evening by converting just nine of the team's 22 free throws, a mark of 40.9% from the charity stripe.
  • Senior Chris Paul (Highland Mills, N.Y.) scored 27 points, shooting 12-for-23 from the floor, and picked up six rebounds and four assists. Senior Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) had 16 points and tied with Paul for the team lead with four assists. Sophomore Matt Becker (Fairfield, Conn.) and senior Joey Belli (Wayne, N.J.) scored 15 and 11 points, respectively. Becker was making his collegiate debut in the game.
  • Senior Alonzo Jackson (Medford, Mass.) had three blocks against Bentley, moving into ninth place on the all-time list with 61 career rejections in 59 games.
  • This season, the Hawks are projected to finish first in the Northeast Division of the Northeast-10 Conference. Saint Anselm earned 91 points and the maximum 13 first-place votes on their way to the top spot in the rankings. Saint Anselm has won each of the last three NE10 Northeast Division Regular Season Championships and two of the last four postseason championships.
  • Saint Anselm took on NCAA Division I Vermont in an exhibition game to begin the year. Tention was the leading scorer for the Hawks, pouring home 26 points on 10-for-21 shooting. Senior Gustav Suhr-Jessen (Virum, Denmark) was responsible for 18 points, connecting on seven of his 10 shots.
  • The Hawks have lost just one student-athlete from the 2020-21 academic year. The Hawks return four of their five starters from its 2019-20 season, compiling a 21-8 record as of the season's abrupt end.
  • A win in the 2020 NE10 Championship game gave the Hawks a commanding 42-4 record when playing at home since the start of the 2017-18 season.
  • Prior to the 2019-20 season's cancellation, Saint Anselm owned the fourth-most potent offense in the East Region, averaging 82.3 points per game, and also enjoyed the region's fourth-best rebound margin (+4.4).
  • Head Coach Keith Dickson, in his 36th year at Saint Anselm, has an overall record of 664-343 (.659) and stands as the program's all-time record holder for coaching victories. He also is the winningest men's basketball coach in NE10 history.

THE RAVENS REPORT

  • Last time out, the Ravens were saddled with a 104-84 loss at California (Pa.) – the Vulcans featured two 30-point scorers on the way to the victory as the hosts shot 60% from the floor.
  • Freshman Mohamed Traore had 20 points for the Ravens, who saw a 14-point performance from junior Isaiah Moore. The latter leads the team with 23.3 points per game, shooting nearly 58 percent from the floor so far this season. Traore is averaging 18 points per game across his first three collegiate games.
  • Across three games, the Ravens have struggled from three-point distance, making less than 30% of their shots from beyond the arc. Franklin Pierce has thrown up 94 shots from beyond the arc, leading the NE10 while ranking 17th in NCAA Division II in that metric.
  • Franklin Pierce is averaging just eight turnovers per game so far this season, the third-best figure in the country.
  • The Ravens are coached by David Chadbourne, who has won over 300 games for Franklin Pierce with the men's basketball team. In his career, he has led the baseball, women's basketball and softball teams as well, combining for 402 wins across all of his games coached.

ALL-TIME vs. FRANKLIN PIERCE

  • Saint Anselm is 41-18 in the all-time series against Franklin Pierce. When playing in Rindge, however, Saint Anselm has won 14 out of a possible 25 games. The Hawks enjoy a 25-3 overall record against Franklin Pierce in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
  • The Hawks have won seven out of the last eight games in the all-time series against the Ravens. Saint Anselm has won each of the last two games played in Rindge, but Franklin Pierce had won eight in a row in the FPU Fieldhouse prior to the pair of wins.
  • Saint Anselm eliminated Franklin Pierce from the 2020 NE10 postseason, winning by a 14-point margin in the NE10 Semifinals round in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. Prior to that victory, the Hawks won back-to-back games, one by a six-point margin and the other by four points.
