MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team finished off the sweep of the back-to-back series against Post University on Saturday, logging a 3-0 victory in New England Women's Hockey Alliance play.
The Hawks move to 4-7-1 overall on the season and to 3-2-1 versus NEWHA opponents. Post falls to 2-8 on the year and to 2-6 against league opponents. Saint Anselm heads to LIU for back-to-back games beginning Friday, Nov. 19 at 3 p.m.
Wearing throwback uniforms from the late-1980's, Saint Anselm fired 41 shots on the day and scored three times to provide Annabella Lalande (Plantagenet, Ontario, Canada) a shutout victory in her first collegiate start. She finished the game with 29 saves, making 12 stops in the third period alone.
Junior Gabrielle Huson (Edina, Minn.) broke the ice at the 16:28 mark of the second period, putting Saint Anselm ahead for good. Senior Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) won a puck battle on the near side boards and sent a cross-ice pass to Huson, who tucked the puck just inside the post to beat Eagles netminder Kaitlyn Daly.
Freshman Gracee Donovan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) made it a 2-0 game with her goal just 4:54 into the third period, using a nifty deke to put the puck home past Daly. Racing up the right side of the ice alongside a teammate, she faked a pass and back-handed the puck home instead, upping the Hawks lead.
On the team's eighth opportunity with the extra skater, freshman Audrey Jackson (Shoreview, Minn.) scored an insurance goal with under two minutes to go in the game to create the final 3-0 margin of victory. Sophomore Brinna Martin (Saint Michael, Minn.) collected a pass down low from senior Erin Meyers (Saint Paul, Minn.) at the top of the slot. Jackson one-timed the Martin pass near the left post, finishing off the play for her second goal in as many days.
For the second consecutive game, Saint Anselm fired at least 40 shots and finished the two-game series with Post with a decisive advantage in shots (84-to-47).
The Hawks overcame 10 penalties called against them, the most in a single game since Feb. 1, 2013 – Saint Anselm successfully killed off all 10 penalties against Post. The Hawks killed off double-digit power plays for their opponent for the first time since blanking Salve Regina with the extra skater in 12 opportunities on Feb. 13, 2010.
