EAST MEADOW, N.Y. –
The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team fell to Long Island University in New England Women's Hockey Alliance play on Friday, 5-1.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 4-8-1 on the season and 3-3-1 in NEWHA play. The Sharks win their seventh consecutive contest, improving to 7-6-0 overall and 7-0-0 in league play. The teams are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 20 with the opening puck drop scheduled for 2 p.m. from the Northwell Health Ice Center.
Sophomore
Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.) netted the lone goal for the Hawks with assists going to sophomore
Claire Weber (Marshfield, Mass.) and freshman
Gracee Donovan (Orchard Park, N.Y.).
The Sharks jumped on the board with the first shot of the contest as
Maggie Culp collected a stretch pass at attacking blue line, driving toward goal in a one-on-one with junior goaltender
Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.). Culp made a move to her backhand to beat the Hawks netminder just 35 seconds into play.
The Hawks quickly responded as they found the net on their first shot of the game just 50 seconds later. McCaffery one-timed a shot from in front of the goal after Weber won a puck battle below the goal line, picking up her third goal of the season.
A power play goal by
Megan Bouveur gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead at 6:20 of the second period and two goals in the final two minutes of the frame by
Jeannie Wallner and
Matilda af Bjur gave the hosts a 4-1 advantage through 40 minutes of play.
Megan Roe added an insurance goal at 3:02 of the final period which extended the lead to 5-1.
The Sharks out-shot the Hawks by a 45-26 margin. LIU was two-for-five on the power play while the Hawks were scoreless on four chances.
Kelley made 40 saves in the contest, making at least 11 saves in each period including 18 in the second stanza.
Tindra Holm allowed the first shot she faced but rebounded to keep the Hawks off the scoresheet after, compiling 25 saves.
