Saint Anselm tripped up at New Haven, 56-7

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College football team fell to the host Chargers from the University of New Haven on Saturday by a 56-7 score.

Saint Anselm drops to 1-4 overall and to 1-3 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. New Haven ups its record to 4-1 and to 3-0 versus the conference.

The New Haven defense recorded six interceptions with a combined return yardage of 199 yards. Taking two of those picks to the house, the hosts also racked up 322 yards of offense – the overall solid field position on the day for the Chargers led to three passing and three rushing scores en route to the victory.

Saint Anselm got its lone score of the afternoon with three seconds left in the first half, capping off a seven play, 65-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown pass to senior Bobby Long (Bridgewater, Mass.). Sophomore quarterback Drew Willoughby (Austin, Texas) threw seven of his 24 pass completions on the day during that successful drive.

The Hawks only trailed by a 21-7 margin at halftime, but five unanswered scores by New Haven created the final score of 56-7. The Saint Anselm defense limited New Haven to just three successful third down conversions (3-for-12), but the Chargers finished the day with eight total scores.

The offensive line for Saint Anselm had another strong game for the Hawks, conceding just two sacks in Saturday's loss – those two takedowns of a Saint Anselm quarterback were the first since Merrimack had three sacks in the season-opener on Sept. 4.

Junior Devin Williams (Cliffwood, N.J.) was the leading tackler on the day for Saint Anselm, finishing with seven takedowns to his credit. Saint Anselm also logged at least seven tackles for a loss for the fourth time in five games this season.

Freshman Austin Spille (Austin, Texas) and senior Seth Kourtesis (Portsmouth, R.I.) each posted a quarterback sack of three yards. Junior Sulton Woolbright, Jr. (Temple Hills, Md.) had a team-best two pass break-ups on the day.

Saint Anselm hosts Stonehill on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. in the annual Battle for the Ol' Bronze Hawk.
