No. 8 field hockey shuts out Mercy (N.Y.), 2-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College field hockey team, ranked eighth in NCAA Division II, recorded a 2-0 shutout over Mercy (N.Y.) College on Saturday at Grappone Stadium.

Saint Anselm moves to 9-3 overall on the season and to 7-2 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Mercy falls to 2-8 overall and has won just one NE10 contest in seven chances. The Hawks have now won via shutout in 25 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

The Hawks fired 24 shots in the contest and a stout Saint Anselm defense conceded just one opposing shot – backstop Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Township, Maine) was there on the shot attempt, making her lone save of the game in her fifth shutout of the season.

Mercy was able to hold the Hawks scoreless in the opening half, but senior Carly LaCasse (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) got her team on the board just 2:11 into the third quarter. On a penalty corner, junior Avery Tucker (Westbrook, Maine) blasted a pass from the top of the arc that found an unmarked LaCasse in front. The senior spun around and sent a ball past Mercy goalkeeper Lauren Viscione.

LaCasse moves into a tie for sixth place all-time on the career points leaderboard for Saint Anselm, scoring 25 goals with eight assists for 58 points (25-8=58). She finds herself tied with Allia Connolly '18 and her 24 goals and 10 assists (24-10=58).

Tucker netted her second goal of the season in the fourth quarter, adding insurance off another penalty corner chance for the Hawks. Junior Joanna Archambault (Andover, Mass.) injected the penalty corner right to Tucker, who moved slightly to her right and sent a booming blast that eluded the lunging Viscione for the team's second goal of the contest.

Viscione made 13 saves for Mercy, conceding just the two goals on the afternoon.

Saint Anselm was awarded 10 of the game's 11 penalty corners.

The Hawks look for their 10th win of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 13, heading to Franklin Pierce for a 6 p.m. showdown at Sodexo Field.
