PREVIEW: Volleyball hosts Bridgeport in non-conference finale

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team concludes its non-conference schedule on Wednesday night when Bridgeport comes to the Hilltop for a 7 p.m. start.

The Hawks ended a two-match losing streak by downing Pace in straight sets on Friday. The Hawks improved to 10-4 while grabbing their first Northeast-10 Conference win on the season. Junior Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) threw up a match-high 36 assists, pushing her over 1,500 for her career. The Hawks return to NE10 play on Tuesday, Oct. 12 when Queen City rival Southern New Hampshire comes to the Hilltop for a 7 p.m. start.

The Knights fell to Molloy on Saturday in a five-set thriller as two sets, including the decider went to extra points. The largest margin of victory in the match was four points. Bridgeport is 7-5 on the season with a 2-1 record in East Coast Conference play. They host D'Youville on Saturday, Oct. 9 in conference play.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • Saint Anselm has gone 5-4 since its season opening 16-set win streak. They won four consecutive matches leading up to the start of NE10 play but were unable to capitalize on their hot hand, dropping the non-conference match against Stonehill and the NE10 opener against Bentley.
  • The last time out against Pace, freshman Gabby Belcher (Buckeye, Ariz.) led all players with 12 kills. Junior Lois Dogbe (Winchester, Calif.) added six points from service aces to lead Saint Anselm. On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) tied a match-high eight digs while classmate Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) posted two blocks.
  • Junior Lauren Casey (Jefferson City, Mo.) leads the Hawks with 120 total kills, averaging 2.86 per set. Sophomore Audrey Simmons (North Hampton, N.H.) ranks second with 101 kills and 2.73 per set. Junior Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) has 152 digs to lead the Hawks defense.
  • Henwood has 430 assists on the season and is posting 9.77 assists per set which is tied for third in the conference. Wetjen leads the conference with .98 blocks per set.
  • The Hawks are tied for fifth in the NE10 in service aces with 110 but lead the league and rank eighth nationally in service aces per set at 2.36.
  • The Hawks are tied for eighth in the NE10 standings and have the second best winning percentage (.714) on the season when compared to NE10 opponents.
SCOUTING THE UNIVERSITY OF BRIDGEPORT
  • The Knights opened the season with a 3-3 record before rattling off three straight wins, including the ECC opener against Roberts Wesleyan. They added another conference win over Queens on Sept. 29 but fell to Molloy in their last match on Oct. 2.
  • Leading the Knights against Molloy was Paolo Hernandez who posted 16 kills. She also added 12 digs and was one of four Knights in double-digit digs. Melanie Smith added 15 kills and 12 digs while Emily Burford led the defense with a match-high 19 digs. Jaden Drollinger threw up 50 assists. Amanda Keller registered three-assisted blocks.
  • Hernandez is averaging 3.47 kills per set and leads the team with 163 kills on the season. Drollinger has 499 assists this season and averages 10.62 per set, which leads the ECC.
  • Keller ranks fourth in the conference in blocks with .68 per set. Burford leads the Knights with 140 total digs which is good for 2.98 per set.
  • The Knights currently sit in a tie for third in the ECC at 2-1. Overall, Bridgeport has the third best winning-percentage when compared to its conference foes.
ALL-TIME vs. THE UNIVERSITY OF BRIDGEPORT
  • This marks the 11th meeting between the Hawks and Knights. Bridgeport is 7-3 all-time against Saint Anselm.
  • The last meeting resulted in a 3-1 win for the Hawks on Sept. 25, 2019. That was the third meeting between the programs during the 2019 season as the Knights held a 2-1 edge in the matches (3-0, 3-2, 1-3).
  • The first meeting came on Oct. 3, 1998 and went the way of the Hawks by a 3-1 score. Saint Anselm won the next meeting before Bridgeport win seven consecutive matchups from Oct. 25, 2003 to Sept. 25, 2019, marking the longest win streak in the all-time series.
