PREVIEW: Men's soccer set to battle with No. 1 Franklin Pierce

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team looks to snap its three-match losing streak, taking on No. 1 Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday, Oct. 6.

The Hawks dropped their last match to No. 22 American International, 1-0. Saint Anselm held a 13-11 edge in shots, however shots on goal were deadlocked at three. With the loss, the Hawks have dropped their third consecutive contest and are now 4-4 on the season with a 2-3 record in Northeast-10 Conference play. Saint Anselm heads to Saint Rose on Saturday, Oct. 9 for a 4 p.m. opening kick.

The Ravens are the country's top-ranked team and posted a 4-1 decision over Assumption on Saturday. They have allowed just two goals all season. Franklin Pierce is 9-0 on the season with a 5-0 record in NE10 play. The Ravens host Southern Connecticut State on Saturday, Oct. 9.

Fans attending the match at Sodexo Field are expected to familiarize themselves with the Franklin Pierce spectator policy.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • After opening the season with a 4-1 record, the Hawks are 0-3, pushing them back to .500, and have been outscored, 5-1, in that span.
  • Junior Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.) has made 28 saves on 35 shots on goal. He has an 0.88 goals against average and a .800 save percentage. Underhill has also played every minute of all eight games for the Hawks this season. He is tied for third in save percentage, fourth in goals against average, and is sixth in total saves, all in the conference.
  • Leading the team in scoring is senior Zach Elliot (Manchester, N.H.). He has five goals and three assists for 13 points, all team-highs.
  • Junior Josue Assantha (Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo) ranks second on the team in all scoring categories with four goals and two assists for 10 points. Assantha is responsible for the last three goals scored by the Hawks.
  • Senior Patrick Sorensen (Sturbridge, Mass.), junior Taylor Silverstein (Concord, N.H.), and junior Jonathan Alves (Peabody, Mass.) each have one goal for Saint Anselm.
  • The Hawks are tied for seventh in the conference with a .400 winning percentage in league play. They have accumulated six points in the standings and hold a plus-two goal differential after scoring eight goals and allowing six.
SCOUTING FRANKLIN PIERCE
  • The Ravens moved to the top spot on the United Soccer Coaches' National Division II Poll on Tuesday. They are 9-0 on the season and have outscored opponents by a 21-2 margin.
  • Pedro Juan Vicente and Braudilio Rodrigues lead the Ravens with four markers each. Juan Vicente and Marco Valero are the team leaders in points with 10 each.
  • Valero has six assists this season which is tied for the conference lead.
  • Nine Ravens have found the back of the net this season while six student-athletes have registered an assist.
  • Kosta Maniatis and Andrea Scapolo have split time in net this season. Maniatis is 7-0 on the season with a 0.30 goals against average and a .833 save percentage. He holds the lowest-goals against average in the league and has allowed just two goals. Scapolo is 2-0 with a 1.000 save percentage.
  • The Ravens hold the top spot in the conference and have allowed just one goal through five NE10 matches.
ALL-TIME vs. FRANKLIN PIERCE
  • This will be the 41st meeting all-time between the two programs. Franklin Pierce is 25-13-2 against Saint Anselm.
  • The last meeting came on Oct. 9, 2019 and resulted in a 3-0 win for the Ravens. The last Hawks victory came on Sept. 26, 2017 in a 3-2 win at Melucci Field.
  • The first meeting between the two programs came on Oct. 9, 1967 in the fourth match in Saint Anselm men's soccer program history. That sparked six straight wins to open the all-time series.
  • Franklin Pierce owns the longest win streak in the series at nine contests, from Sept. 28, 1987 to Oct. 13, 1999.
  • The last win in Rindge for Saint Anselm was on Sept. 21, 2002.
  • All-time against the No. 1 team nationally, Saint Anselm is 0-2 with losses coming at Southern Connecticut State on Sept. 14, 2002 and against Southern New Hampshire on Sept. 24, 2014.
