MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team dropped the second game of its home-and-home series with Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, 3-2.
The Hawks fall to 2-6 on the season with a 1-1 record in New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) play while the Ravens improve to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in league contests.
Saint Anselm heads to Sacred Heart on Friday, Nov. 5 and Saturday Nov. 6 for a weekend series against the Pioneers.
Franklin Pierce struck first on the power play at 7:42 of the opening period.
Becca Kniss controlled play in the left corner and deked a defender. With the clearance, she fired a wrist shot into the top-right corner to give the hosts a 1-0 edge.
The Hawks answered back at 14:35 of the first period as freshman
Tyra Turner (Andover, Mich.) cleaned up a rebound chance from sophomore
Brinna Martin (Saint Michael, Minn.) for her first collegiate goal. Senior
Erin Meyers (Saint Paul, Minn.) was working behind the net and found Turner for an opening shot. Martin corralled the rebound and fired a shot on
Suzette Faucher which was saved but the rebound went to Turner on the doorstep to knot the score at one.
The Ravens added their second power-play tally, this one in a five-on-three scenario at 6:11 of the second period.
Geno Hendrickson sent a shot that was deflected by
Marissa Massaro on junior
Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.), who got most of the puck, but the rebound trickled toward the goal line and
Katelyn Brightbill won the battle to the loose puck to finish off the play, giving Franklin Pierce a 2-1 edge.
Franklin Pierce took a two-goal lead nearly 11 minutes later as Massaro again redirected a shot in front by
Stefanie Caban. This one managed to beat Kelley cleanly to give the Ravens a 3-1 lead.
Saint Anselm cut the deficit to one in the final minute of the second period as junior
Devin Porazinski (Parker, Colo.) sent a pass behind the net for sophomore
Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.). McCaffery sent a pass to the point for freshman
Madi Ressler (Brighton, Mich.), who pushed the puck back to the sophomore who put a shot by Faucher on the power play, marking the first career tally for McCaffery.
After five goals through two periods between the teams, neither goaltender allowed a goal as both made seven saves in the final 20 minutes of play. The Hawks attempted to find the equalizer in the final period, pulling Kelley for an extra skater but were unable to register a shot in the final minute.
The Ravens won 35 face-offs to 22 for the Hawks. Saint Anselm held a 25-23 edge in shots on goal. Franklin Pierce was 2-for-3 on the power play while the Hawks were 1-for-5.
Kelley stopped 20 shots on goal in the losing effort while Faucher made 23 saves.
