Women's volleyball ends New Haven's 12-match winning streak

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team snapped the 12-match winning streak of the host Chargers from the University of New Haven on Friday, claiming victory in five sets.

Saint Anselm improves its record to 15-5 overall on the year while moving to 5-2 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. New Haven falls for just the first time since Saturday, Sept. 18, dipping to 17-6 overall and to 7-1 versus the league.

Just two matches prior, the Hawks ended a nine-game winning streak for Stonehill. Saint Anselm has now locked down wins in six out of its last seven matches and returns to action Saturday, Oct. 30 to take on Southern Connecticut State at 3 p.m. on the road.

Saint Anselm won the first two sets by scores of 25-23, but New Haven rallied to bring the match even with wins of 26-24 and 25-21. The Hawks jumped ahead by a 12-4 score in the fifth set, eventually taking a 15-11 win over the host Chargers.

Junior Lauren Casey (Jefferson City, Mo.) had a career evening for the Hawks, pounding out a career-high 26 kills on 66 swings while contributing with 14 digs defensively. The 26 kills in a five-set match is the most since Katy Teets '18 had as many versus Assumption on Sept. 8, 2017 – Casey trailed the all-time team record of 28 kills by just two.

Junior Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) set up a career-high 55 assists for the Hawks and classmate Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) matched a career-high with 27 digs in the winning effort. Sophomore Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) was also a major contributor, producing 12 kills, and Henwood completed the double-double as well with 17 digs defensively.

Sophomores Alina Barbarena (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) reached career-high marks with 15 and 13 digs, respectively. The team's 71 kills and 97 digs were season-high figures while the 63 assists tied the team's single-match record this season.

Ahead by a 22-20 score in the first set, Saint Anselm conceded two quick points and called a timeout. Freshman Gabby Belcher (Buckeye, Ariz.) scored the next point in the match and the Hawks never looked back, utilizing two kills from Casey down the stretch to secure the 25-23 victory. Casey had six kills on 11 swings without an error in the opener.

The score was tied at 23 in the second set before two kills from Casey broke the deadlock. At one point in the second, the Hawks fired off seven consecutive points to take a three-point lead before New Haven rallied to tie the score with six in a row of their own.

The teams once again played to a tie score late, this time it was a 24-24 score in the third set, but New Haven was the team that prevailed. The Chargers used a late kill before a Hawks attacking error ended the third, shrinking the Saint Anselm lead in the match to a 2-1 score. The third set saw a total of 20 tie scores and eight lead changes.

New Haven pulled away near the midpoint of the fourth set, turning a 15-14 lead into a 21-15 advantage before taking a 25-21 fourth set. Saint Anselm misfired on 10 of its 47 attacks as a team and logged three service errors, sending the match into a fifth and final set.

The Hawks built up a 12-4 lead with the help of six points in a row. New Haven cut the score to 13-9, but Saint Anselm maintained a four-point lead to end the match. Junior Lois Dogbe (Winchester, Calif.) had a kill to make the score 14-10 and Casey had the final kill of the match, giving her 26 on the evening.
