MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team opened its New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) schedule with a 1-0 victory over Franklin Pierce University on Friday night at Sullivan Arena.
The Hawks snap a five-game losing streak and improve to 2-5 on the year while the Ravens fall to 2-4 with an 0-1 mark in NEWHA play. The teams have a quick turnaround to finish the home-and-home series as the puck drops in Rindge, N.H. at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30.
Saint Anselm opened the scoring just 3:53 into the game as freshman
Gracee Donovan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) found the twine with a wrist shot from the left face-off circle for her first-career goal. Classmate
Madi Ressler (Brighton, Mich.) forced a turnover in the Hawks defensive end and found Donovan out the breakout.
Saint Anselm had a 9-6 edge in shots on goal at the end of the first period.
The Ravens opened the second stanza with their best chance to score as
Emilie Prive created space in the slot with a toe drag. Junior goaltender
Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) made the initial save and then slid to her right to turn aside a rebound shot from
Jenna Ruiz.
The Hawks had a strong scoring chance to add to their lead in the second period as senior
Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) had a one-on-one with
Emme Ostrander but Golini's backhanded shot was turned aside.
The Ravens put 13 shots on Kelley in the second period while the Hawks added 11 to their total.
In the third period, the Ravens peppered Kelley with 21 shots on goal. In two scenarios, Franklin Pierce fired a shot on target and forced the junior goaltender to make the save. However, Kelley would stop two rebound opportunities in the process, including one of those chances with Ostrander out of the goal in favor of the extra skater.
Franklin Pierce won 29-of-51 face-offs and held a 40-to-26 advantage in shots on goal. Both squads were 0-for-4 in extra-skater opportunities.
Kelley posted her first career shutout in the winning effort, stopping all 40 shots she faced. Ostrander suffered the loss, allowing just one goal on 26 shots.
