No. 6 field hockey upended by No. 3 Assumption in overtime

WORCESTER, Mass. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College field hockey team was upended by the host Greyhounds from Assumption University by a 1-0 margin in overtime on Tuesday.

Saint Anselm, the No. 6-ranked team in NCAA Division II, falls to 13-4 overall on the season and to 10-3 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Assumption, ranked third in the country, has won 16 games in a row to move to 16-1 overall while remaining perfect in 13 league fixtures.

The Hawks and Greyhounds each fired nine shots in the game, but Assumption ripped eight of those shots in the fourth quarter and overtime combined. From the start of the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds fired eight of the game's final nine shots and controlled the possession.

The game-winning goal came in overtime off the stick of Mia Salah, who tipped home a ball sent in by Kileigh Hynes just 3:34 into the extra period. Assumption, the top team in the official NCAA Division II East Region rankings, looks to close out a perfect NE10 schedule with one final regular-season game against Saint Thomas Aquinas on Saturday.

The Hawks fired seven of the game's first eight shots leading into halftime, but Kylie Gargiulo made saves on six of the attempts. Saint Anselm also was awarded a penalty stroke in the game's 23rd minute, but could not convert as the shot went wide. The Hawks were unable to generate another shot on goal through the third, fourth and overtime period.

Gargiulo earned the win for Assumption, earning the shutout with six rejections of Saint Anselm shots. Sophomore Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Township, Maine) conceded one goal on five shots, drawing just her third loss of the season.

Saint Anselm looks to finish the regular season strong with a 2 p.m. contest against New Haven slated for Friday, Oct. 29.
