Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Kelley sets program record in loss to Harvard

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) set a program record for saves in a single game with 58 as the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey lost to Harvard, 6-2, on Saturday.

Competing in a back-to-back with Yale on Friday and now Harvard on Saturday, Saint Anselm drops to 1-5 on the season while the Crimson, who are receiving votes in the USCHO weekly poll, improve to 2-0. Saint Anselm opens New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) play on Friday, Oct. 29 when Franklin Pierce comes to the Hilltop.

Harvard jumped on the board just 1:15 into the first as Ellie Bayard cleaned up a rebound chance from a Dominique Petrie shot that was turned aside by Kelley.

The Hawks would tie the score at 7:55 of the opening frame as senior Erin Meyers (Saint Paul, Minn.) collected a loose puck on the penalty kill. She chipped it past a defender to gain clearance from the defensive end and won the race to the puck in the neutral zone. She drove in, on a breakaway, and fired a wrist shot by Lindsay Reed, knotting the score at one.

The Crimson regained the lead in the second period as Keely Moy finished off a wrap-around goal after taking advantage of free space inside the Hawks defensive end at 14:13 of the second stanza.

Saint Anselm went to the power play after a tripping penalty was called on Harvard. Sophomore Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.) got the play moving inside the attacking zone, dropping a pass for freshman Madi Ressler (Brighton, Mich.) who sent it right back to McCaffery. The sophomore fired a slap shot from the top of the left circle that was going wide, but junior Kenadie Cooper (Gilbert, Ariz.) redirected the shot into the back of the net to tie the score at two, less than two minutes after Harvard regained the lead.

Petrie capitalized on a two-on-one with Moy to give the hosts a 3-2 lead with 45 seconds left in the second stanza. Moy slowed and sent a cross-crease pass to Petrie who capped off the play with the backhand.

Bayard and Becca Gilmore struck less than one minute apart with just under three minutes into the final regulation period. Bayard cashed in on another rebound chance before Gilmore finished a one-on-one with Kelley from inside the faceoff circles. Kelley attempted to poke check the play away but Gilmore slid a shot under the goaltender and into the back of the net, giving the Crimson a 5-2 lead.

Gilmore added her second goal of the contest, walked out of the corner and picked the top-left corner at 4:27 of the third period, giving the Crimson a four-goal lead.

Harvard held a 64-15 shots on goal advantage while going 0-for-5 on the power play. Saint Anselm was 1-for-6 with the extra skater.

Kelley falls to 1-5 on the season after stopping 58 shots. Reed made 13 saves in the win, improving to 1-0.
