SEAFORD, N.Y. – The No. 6-ranked Saint Anselm College field hockey team came away with a convincing 7-1 victory over the hosts from Molloy College on Saturday.
Saint Anselm used seven goal scorers to win its sixth game in a row, moving to 13-3 overall on the year and to 10-2 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Molloy remains without a victory in 12 games overall and in 10 contests versus league foes.
The Hawks outshot the Lions by a combined 33-to-3 margin and were awarded 12 of the game's 14 penalty corners. The team's 17 points of offense is the ninth-most in a single game in team history and the seven goals is the sixth-most ever scored in a single contest.
Saint Anselm got on the board just 10:45 into the game and never looked back. Sophomore Abbey Bevens (Pelham, N.H.) got on the scoreboard first, deflecting a hard ball sent in by junior Avery Tucker (Westbrook, Maine) to create a 1-0 lead.
With just 27 seconds left in the first quarter, senior Emilie Martin (Yarmouth, Maine) created a 2-0 lead, finishing off a pass from sophomore Maddie Davis (Exeter, N.H.) for the goal.
Molloy scored just their fifth goal of the season shortly into the second half of play as Kyra Dalli cut into the Hawks lead, 2-1, at 33:13. She was set up by Bella Bigeni, whose dish allowed Dalli to spin around at the top of the slot and beat Hawks netminder Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Township, Maine).
Freshman Abby Breznyak (Oakland, Maine) came off the bench for Saint Anselm to take a penalty stroke less than five minutes later. She did not miss the opportunity, re-establishing a two-goal lead for the Hawks in the contest with her second goal of the season at 38:11.
Junior Maggie Malloy (Canton, Mass.) logged a goal at 40:13, her third goal of the campaign, and Tucker picked up her second assist of the afternoon on the play to create a 4-1 advantage.
Junior Shelby Dunn (Yarmouthport, Mass.) was granted another penalty stroke for Saint Anselm, this time just 2:53 into the fourth quarter. She logged her second goal of the season in the process.
Freshmen Chloe Kapsambelis (Merrimack, N.H.) and Amanda Lewandowski (Franklin, Mass.) scored unassisted goals in the game's final four minutes of play, creating the final score of 7-1. For Kapsambelis, it was the first goal of her collegiate career and it came from distance, beating the sprawling Lions netminder.
McConnell earned the victory in net for Saint Anselm, making one save on two shots. Ally Saigh conceded seven goals, but made an impressive 18 saves in the defeat.
Saint Anselm will take on the top team in the East Region rankings, Assumption, on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. The Hawks wrap up the regular season of play on Friday, Oct. 29, hosting New Haven in a rare 2 p.m. contest at Grappone Stadium.
