NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team was blanked by Yale in non-conference action on Friday night, 8-0.
Taking on Yale for the first time in program history, the Hawks fall to 1-4 on the season while the Bulldogs open their 2021-22 campaign at 1-0. Saint Anselm heads to another ECAC Hockey opponent on Saturday afternoon at Harvard. The opening puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Yale would open the scoring 7:23 into the first period as
Emma DeCorby fired a shot that deflected off a Hawks defender and floated by junior
Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.). The Bulldogs doubled their lead on an odd-player rush just over three minutes later when
Ania Trummer fired a shot from the left face-off circle and into the right side of the net.
After winning an offensive zone face-off, the Hawks fired three quick shots coming from sophomore
Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.) which were saved and two secondary chances from junior
Gabrielle Huson (Edina, Minn.) and freshman
Madi Ressler (Brighton, Mich.) – those shot attempts were blocked by Yale defenders.
Rebecca Vanstone registered a pair of goals late in the first period as her tallies were separated by just 20 seconds. Vanstone collected a home run pass at the Hawks blue line and drove in toward goal on a breakaway, beating Kelley with a wrist shot. Her second goal came on another deflected shot by a Hawks defender.
The Bulldogs held a 4-0 lead through the opening 20 minutes and fired 18 shots on goal to five for the Hawks.
Elle Hartje extended the lead to five just 4:15 into the second frame. Hartje collected a loose puck in front and beat freshman backstop
Annabella Lalande (Plantagenet, Ontario), who came on in goal for Saint Anselm in relief.
At 15:08 of the second period, Yale found their first power play goal as
Greta Skarzynski was the recipient of a cross-crease pass that was fired into the top of the cage to give the hosts a 6-0 lead.
Through two periods, the Bulldogs fired 42 shots on goal to just 10 for the Hawks.
Yale registered two more goals in the final stanza as
Tess Dettling used a Saint Anselm defender as a screen and fired a shot into the upper right hand corner of the net.
Claire Dalton scored the eighth goal for the Bulldogs, on the power play, in the final minute of play.
Kelley suffers the loss, falling to 1-4 on the young season. Kelley made eight saves on 12 shots on goal while Lalande stopped 43-of-47 shots on goal.
Gianna Meloni made 18 saves in the season-opening shutout for Yale.
