PREVIEW: Men's soccer to honor four seniors vs. SCSU

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team is set to honor four seniors prior to the start of the match against Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday, Oct. 16.

The Hawks will honor and recognize four of their senior student-athletes, Chris Gallier (Savannah, Ga.), Jake Reynolds (Weare, N.H.), Jordan Trombly (Manchester, N.H.), and Patrick Sorensen (Sturbridge, Mass.) prior to the start of the match. Saint Anselm has two weekday matches at Melucci Field on Tuesday, Oct. 19 against Le Moyne and Wednesday, Oct. 27 against Southern New Hampshire to close out the home schedule.

Saint Anselm snapped its five-match losing streak with a 2-1 win over regionally-ranked Saint Thomas Aquinas on Oct. 12. With the win, the Hawks improved to 5-6 on the season and concluded their non-conference schedule. After the match against the Owls, the Hawks host Le Moyne on Tuesday, Oct. 19.

Southern Connecticut State dropped its last match to No. 1 Franklin Pierce on Oct. 9 by a 7-0 score. With the loss, the Owls fall to 2-7-1 on the season with a 2-4 record in Northeast-10 Conference play. After the match with the Hawks, Southern Connecticut State will make its third consecutive away match at Assumption on Tuesday, Oct. 19.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • As of Oct. 14, the Hawks rank fifth in the conference in goals against average (1.09), fourth in points (39), the fifth lowest goals allowed (12), and fifth in saves (44). Saint Anselm currently sits in a tie for 10th in the NE10 standings with a 0.286-win percentage.
  • Junior Jackson Bukunt (Upton, Mass.) and freshman Caden Leader (Durham, N.H.) registered their first-career goals in the 2-1 win over Saint Thomas Aquinas. Bukunt and Leader became the seventh and eighth goal scorers for the Hawks who have found the back of the net on 14 occasions this season.
  • Through 11 games, the Hawks have surrendered one goal or less in seven matches and have not allowed opponents to score more than twice in a single contest. The win over Saint Thomas Aquinas was the first match in which the Hawks scored multiple times since they scored four times against Stonehill on Sept. 22.
  • Senior Zach Elliot (Manchester, N.H.) and junior Josue Assantha (Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo) are tied for eighth and tenth in the conference in goals with five and four each. They make up nine of the Hawks' 14 goals this season.
  • Junior Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.) stopped seven of eight shots on goal in Tuesday's win. Underhill ranks third in the NE10 in saves (44), seventh in save percentage (0.786), and eight in goals against average (1.09). He is 5-6 on the season and has played every minute of each game for Saint Anselm.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE
  • The Owls dropped three of their first four matches before downing Saint Michael's in the NE10 Conference opener, improving to 1-3-1. Since, Southern Connecticut State is 1-4, posting a 1-0 win over New Haven. However, they dropped their last contest against Franklin Pierce.
  • Leading the Owls offense is Juan Alava and Leroy Best. Both student-athletes have found the back of the net twice. As a team, the Owls have scored just seven times this season.
  • Alava, Jalen Jean, Juan Aliva, Alex de Cunha, and Arnold Signell all have one assist each this season.
  • Bailey Bassett has made 46 saves, which ranks second in the conference. He is 2-7-1 in 10 starts this season with a 2.13-goals against average and a 0.687 save percentage.
  • Southern Connecticut State sits in ninth in the conference standings with a 0.333-win percentage. The Owls have allowed the third most goals (15) in NE10 play and have scored the fewest (6).
ALL-TIME SERIES vs. SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT
  • The Owls are 17-4-2 all-time against the Hawks, making this the 24th meeting all-time. Southern Connecticut State won the last meeting on Oct. 19, 2019 by a 1-0 score in overtime. The last meeting at Melucci Field went the way of the Hawks by a 3-2 score on Oct. 26, 2018.
  • Since the first meeting on Oct. 4, 2000, Southern Connecticut State has outscored the Hawks 48-to-21, holding a plus-27 goal differential.
  • The Owls own the longest-win streak in the series, seven matches, from Sept. 2, 2006 to Oct. 6, 2012.
