Saint Anselm, the No. 2 seed in the Northeast Division, improves to 20-6 overall on the season following the win over the Southwest Division's third seed, New Haven (18-9), and moves on to battle top-seeded Adelphi in the NE10 Semifinals on Thursday, Mar. 5. The game against the Panthers, who own a 27-2 record, will tip at 7 p.m.
Saint Anselm has reached 20 victories for the second consecutive season and for the 11th time in team history. The Hawks have reached the NE10 semifinals for the second-straight year and remain in search of the squad's first win there since the 1998-99 season.
The Hawks were led by 20 points from junior Peyton Steinman, who led student-athletes from both teams with four takeaways. Ryan had 17 rebounds, 15 points, four assists (career-high) and two blocks in the defensive battle and junior Jenoyce Laniyan (Bedford, N.H.) was responsible for a career-high 12 points and two blocks off the bench.
Ryan, who capped the day with 387 rebounds, held the previous single-season program record with 385 caroms, accomplishing that feat last season. She sits fifth in the NE10's single-season history, needing only two more to reach third place in league annals.
Down by a 4-0 margin, Saint Anselm responded with a 22-4 scoring run to capture a game-high lead of 14 points. At one point, the Hawks potted 16 consecutive points on the way to the big advantage; in that run, Saint Anselm was led by six points from Ryan and a total of 10 points in the paint.
Between the first and second half, New Haven settled down and scored 17 of the game's 22 points across an eight-plus minute stretch of play. Camryn DeBose had six points herself and Aurora Deshaies, one of the NE10's leaders in field goal percentage, put home four points under the basket.
New Haven came from behind to capture a 39-38 lead with just 13 seconds elapsed in the fourth quarter, but the Hawks put the game out of reach with a strong 11-2 scoring run over the game's next four-plus minutes. The Saint Anselm lead grew to 13 points in the game's final minute, thanks to the hosts posting 17 of the contest's final 22 points.
The Chargers, who shot just 34% for the game from the floor, were led by DeBose's 17 points.
