Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball moves to 16-4 overall, downing Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games on Wednesday, handing Assumption College a 63-54 defeat at Laska Gymnasium in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Box Score

Saint Anselm improves to 16-4 overall, having won 12 of its 14 conference games to date. Assumption evens its record at 11-11, dipping to 5-9 against the league. The Hawks host Stonehill this Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1:30 p.m. – Saint Anselm welcomes back its former student-athletes on Alumni Day and the team will host its annual Jenny Fund contest.

Junior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) led Saint Anselm with 31 points, thanks to 13 made free throws and an 8-for-14 performance from the floor. Senior Shannon Ryan (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) secured her 18th double-double of the season, racking up 14 rebounds and 12 total points.

Ryan requires only seven additional rebounds to become the third student-athlete in team history to reach 1,000 in her career. She would be the first since Andrea Sunday '95 to do so. With 1,560 career points, she moves into third place all-time in team history and, defensively, her 182 career blocks place her in a tie for third place in team history.

The Hawks and Hounds played to nine tied scores through the first one-and-a-half quarters on Wednesday, finding themselves tied at 26 with 6:29 to go in the second stanza. The Hawks pulled away with a 20-7 scoring run over the game's next 8:19, spanning the first and second halves, as Assumption had only three field goals in that timeframe.

Assumption shrunk the Hawks lead to five points, 52-47, with 7:10 left in regulation time, but the Hawks pulled away thanks to strong play from Steinman and junior Grace Guachione (Pittsfield, Mass.). The duo partnered to score all but two of their team's next 11 points, recreating a double-digit lead in the final minute of play.

Saint Anselm kept Assumption to under 30% shooting from the floor on the game. The host Greyhounds won the rebounding battle, 39-to-34, but the poor shooting performance by Assumption was what proved to be the difference-maker.

Assumption was led by 11 points from Meghan Reen. Temi Falayi cleaned the glass with 15 of her squad's 39 caroms.
