Ryan sets career scoring record in win at Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Shannon Ryan (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) of the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team became the program's all-time leading scorer in Saturday's 86-52 victory at Saint Michael's College.

Saint Anselm improves to 18-6 overall on the season, having won 10 of its 12 road games on the 2019-20 schedule. Saint Michael's falls to 8-16 overall and to 2-16 versus the league.

Winners of 14 out of 18 games in Northeast-10 Conference play, the Hawks remain in a tie for second place in the Northeast Division alongside Bentley. The Falcons and Hawks will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 25 in the regular-season finale at 5:30 p.m.

Across 89 games between Boston College and Saint Anselm, Ryan has scored 1,668 points, eclipsing the previous team record of 1,652 points set by Rachel Jackson '85 from 1981-85. She has averaged 18.7 points per game in her career and ranks second all-time in team history with 1,058 career rebounds, trailing only Jackson's team record of 1,185.

Ryan achieved her 60th career double-double against Saint Michael's, finishing with 28 points and 16 rebounds across 26 minutes. Junior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) posted 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steaks in the win. Classmate Grace Guachione (Pittsfield, Mass.) had 12 points with four rebounds and as many steals, leading student-athletes from both teams.

Senior Sara Messler (Durham, N.H.) handed out a career-high eight assists in the win as the Hawks finished with 22 helpers as a team. Freshman Olivia Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) also chipped in with a career-high four points and classmate Macy Spinks (Luton, England) secured five rebounds, a personal-best figure.

Ryan scored only 31 seconds into the contest and the Hawks never looked back. Opening the game on a 10-1 run, the Hawks grew their lead to 16 points at halftime. In the second half, the Saint Anselm advantage extended to a game-high 34 points with 15 seconds left after a free throw by McKenzy Ouellette (West Newfield, Maine) with 14 ticks left on the scoreboard.

The Hawks shot north of 50% in three of the four quarters, finishing the game with a 49.3% shooting percentage after making 33 of their 67 shots from the floor. Saint Anselm also enjoyed a +31 rebound margin in the contest, collecting 53 rebounds while limiting the home team to only 22 caroms.

Saint Michael's was led by 12-point performances by Nicole Anderson and Nicole Ladas.
