WINCHENDON, Mass. – Senior Trey Aiello (Williamsburg, Va.) of the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team broke the all-time career games played record in Saturday's 4-2 loss to Northeast-10 Conference-foe Franklin Pierce on Saturday afternoon at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
Box Score
The Hawks, who dropped to fourth in the conference standings, fall to 12-12-2 on the year. Saint Anselm heads into the final week of the regular season with a 7-7-2 record against NE10 opponents. The Ravens, who are one point away from the Hawks in the standings, improve to 14-10-4 overall and 7-6-3 in NE10 play.
Aiello has now played the most games (109) in a single career at Saint Anselm, passing Brett Smith '07 and his four-year total of 108.
After a back-and-forth battle with each team trading goals to be tied at two, the Ravens scored two late goals in each of the final two stanza to earn the 4-2 victory.
The Ravens got on the board first as Conor Foley gathered a rebounded shot off the board and netted the puck inside the left post at 4:37 into the game. Saint Anselm responded later in the period with a tally of their own. Off a neutral-zone faceoff win, freshman Chris Lemay (Salem, N.H.) gathered the loose puck and sent a shot from the slot that went off the goalie's pad. Sophomore Kevin Ouellette (Arlington, Mass.) gained the rebounded and scored.
Just before the three-minute mark of the second period, the Ravens struck again and took the lead off an Anthony Nikolopoulos goal.
Four minutes later, freshman Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) dished a pass across the slot to the attacking junior Matt Chisholm (Scituate, Mass.) who one-timed it into the net. Chisholm has now recorded one point in the last four games. After the goal, both teams traded possession with neither of them converting on any scoring chances until Foley scored his second tally of the game at 16:56.
The Hawks and Ravens battled for control of possession early in the third with neither finding it until Cameron Shepardson of the Ravens secured the win for the hosts with a goal at 13:41.
In net, sophomore Michal Soustal (Unicov, Czech Republic) finished with 22 saves, yielding four goals. Soustal's counterpart, Ian Wallace, stopped 30 shots while allowing two goals. Junior John Femia (Canton, Mass.) won 11 of his 23 faceoff attempts.
Despite losing, Saint Anselm had the 32-26 shots advantage at the end of 60 minutes. Both teams could not score on the power play as they went a combined 0-for-9.
The Hawks return to Sullivan Arena for senior day on Friday, Feb. 21 against crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire for a 7 p.m. dual.
