Women's ice hockey opens weekend with a 1-0 loss at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey squad was toppled by the Bears from Brown University, 1-0, on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.

Box Score

The Hawks fall to 13-9-2 while the Bears earn their third win of the season, improving to 3-15-1. The Hawks will take on the Bears for the second time this weekend on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 3 p.m.

After two scoreless periods, the Bears found the back of the net at 11:03 of the third stanza. Saint Anselm goaltender Kia Castonguay (Ipswich, Mass.) stopped an initial shot in front, but Brown's Tina Paolillo crashed in to bury what proved to be the game-winning tally.

Following a Gabby Monaco (La Verne, Calif.) penalty in the first period, the Bears responded with three straight shots. Off a face-off, Jacquie Tam deflected a shot in the middle of the slot for Castonguay to cover up, maintaining the scoreless contest. Castonguay finished the opening 20 minutes with 12 saves.

After a media timeout at 10:36 of the second period, the Hawks rattled off 12 shots with four coming from Monaco. None of those scoring chances found the back of the net. Following another Brown penalty at 12:48, the Hawks earned a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity which they fired four shots but was denied each time.

The Hawks best scoring opportunity came at 5:34 in the final period as sophomore Erin Meyers (Saint Paul, Minn.) sent a shot that went off the left pad of Isaac. Senior Kaley Campbell (Colchester, Vt.) gained the rebound and crashed the net for another chance that was pushed away.

In net, Castonguay finished the contest with 27 saves. Brown's Calla Isaac recorded 25 stops in the win. Junior Katy Meehan (Quincy, Mass.) led the squad with 11 faceoff wins.

Saint Anselm was 0-for-7 on the power play for the second consecutive game. Brown was held scoreless on three power play opportunities - the Hawks penalty kill has allowed only two goals in its last 23 opportunities.
