Women's ice hockey falls to Colby, 4-3, in overtime

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team led by two goals on two separate occasions, but the Hawks posted a 4-3 loss to the Mules from Colby College in overtime on Friday as part of Pink in the Rink weekend.

Box Score

Colby, receiving votes in the USCHO Division III women's ice hockey poll, improves to 9-1-2 overall on the season. The Hawks fall to 12-8-1 on the year with the overtime defeat.

Junior Jayden Young (Norwood, N.Y.) had a two-goal performance for the Hawks, who led by a 2-0 margin and later owned a 3-1 advantage over the Mules. Hawks backstop Michaela Kane (Haverhill, Mass.) made 32 saves in the loss, conceding four goals, including a breakaway, game-winning goal by Anna Cosentino at 3:08 of the overtime frame.

Young's two goals put the Hawks ahead by a 2-0 margin in the first period. A shot from freshman Marissa Agerter (Eagan, Minn.) was saved, but Young crashed the net for her first goal at 9:25 of the first period. Her second marker came minutes later after picking the pocket of a Colby defender and back-handing the puck home five-hole.

Colby scored three of the four goals in the second period, tying the contest at three heading into the final 20 minutes of game play.

Skating on the power play, a simple wrister from the left point by Colby was tipped home at the left post by Tay Munson only 3:27 into the second period. Saint Anselm recreated a two-goal bulge as sophomore Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored on the power play, tipping home a shot by junior Kathleen LeFebre (Methuen, Mass.) to up the Hawks lead to 3-1.

Colby capped the second period with two goals, one from Tess Dupre and the second from McKinley Karpa. Dupre's marker came on a broken play behind the Hawks net – as Lexi Cafiero was falling to the ice around the right post, Dupre poked the loose puck past the Hawks backstop for the goal.

The game-tying goal by Karpa came off a two-on-one rush. A left-to-right cross by Dupre was sent home by Karpa, beating Kane five-hole to tie the game at three with less than three minutes to go in the period.

The Hawks appeared to dominate Colby in the overtime period, racking up the first four shots of extra time, but the Mules converted on a breakaway and scored on their first shot of the period.

Savannah Shaw made 24 saves on 27 shots for Colby, who was led offensively by a three-point performance by Dupre (1-2=3).

Saint Anselm welcomes Colby back to the Hilltop on Saturday, Jan. 18 for a 1 p.m. contest as part of Pink in the Rink weekend.
