Men's ice hockey stymied by Worcester State, 2-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team was downed by a 2-1 score at the hands of the visiting Lancers from Worcester State University on Tuesday.

Box Score

The Lancers remain unbeaten through their first seven games of the season while Saint Anselm dips to 4-2-0 following the non-league defeat. The Hawks head to Maine this weekend, taking on Bowdoin at Colby on Saturday before switching venues and opponents for Sunday's tilt.

Worcester State scored the game's first two goals, taking advantage of power play opportunities. Andrew Etheridge put the Lancers ahead only 7:42 into the game, sneaking a centering pass from Nick Patullo past Hawks netminder Shane Joyce.

Patullo notched the Lancers' second power play goal of the evening of a slap shot that found its way just inside the right post behind Joyce at 6:51 of the second period. Entrenched in the offensive zone, Cody Weaver and Erik Pritchard maneuvered the puck around the top of the faceoff circles before finding Patullo unopposed at the left circle.

Saint Anselm got on the board with a tally from Bryan Green at 11:10 of the middle stanza. A failed Worcester State clearance was sent to the top of the left faceoff circle and flipped home by Joey Harrington and tipped by Green at the top of the goal crease. Harrington recorded his first collegiate point on the play.

The Hawks had six chances on the power play, including a brief stint with the 5-on-3 advantage, but failed to capitalize with the extra skater on the night. Saint Anselm also held the narrow edge in shots on goal, 23-to-20, but Worcester State's Josh Reinstein made 22 saves and yielded only one goal for the victory.

Joyce drew his first loss of the season, allowing two goals on 20 shots against.
