Women's tennis tames Chargers

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Jess Perkins, Tess Malerbi, Kaitlin Hughes and Caroline Templer each won both their matches as the Saint Anselm College women's tennis team downed The University of New Haven 7-2 on Friday afternoon at Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on the campus of Yale University.

Saint Anselm (5-5, 4-5 NE-10) got a doubles sweep and two quick singles wins to secure the win over New Haven (2-9, 2-8 NE-10). The victory was the Hawks' third in their last four Northeast-10 Conference matches.

In doubles, Perkins and Hughes won their ninth match out of 10 with an 8-0 victory at the second spot, while Malerbi and Meghan Golden earned an 8-1 win at the top spot. Templer and Bridget Keefe won the tightest match of the three by claiming the final two games for an 8-5 victory at third doubles.

Perkins provided the first singles point with her seventh 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles. Hughes dropped just one game in her 6-1, 6-0 triumph at fourth singles to provide the clinching fifth point for the Hawks.

With the win wrapped up, Malerbi and Templer won their matches at No. 2 and No. 5 singles in eight-game pro sets by scores of 8-1 and 8-4, respectively.

In the lone three-set match of the afternoon, New Haven's Sarah Burzin outlasted Golden 5-7, 6-2, 10-3 at No. 3 singles. The Chargers also got an 8-6 win from Shelby Clyne at No. 6 singles.

Saint Anselm travels to American International College on Wednesday, Oct. 5 for a 3 p.m. match against the Yellow Jackets.

Perkins will compete at the Division II ITA Oracle Cup East Region Championships, hosted by NYIT, this weekend at Sportime Syosset in Syosset, N.Y. Perkins is seeded No. 16 in the singles draw and reached the Round of 16 at the event last year. For more information on the tournament, click here.
