Baseball scores late but drops 5-2 decision at New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team fell to the University of New Haven, 5-2, on Monday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Frank Vieira Field in New Haven, Conn.

The Hawks (8-28, 3-16 NE-10) wrap up the road portion of their schedule and will host seven-straight home games to end the season starting with tomorrow's meeting against Southern New Hampshire University scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.

John Marculitis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) went 1-for-4 with an RBI double, while Ken Morrisino (East Longmeadow, Mass.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Matthew Flynn (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Max Wadington (Burlington, Conn.) were each 1-for-4 with Paul Trabucco (Salem, N.H.) and Allan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) each going 1-for-3.

Jonathan Dunn (Nashua, N.H.) suffered the setback, tossing five innings while giving up six hits, four runs (three earned) and striking out five. Adam Krol (Sunderland, Mass.) pitched two innings and gave up one run on one hit with a pair of strikeouts. Seve Llanio (Glen Arm, Md.) pitched a perfect eighth inning for the Hawks.

New Haven's Robert Petrillo went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Dylon Grzenda was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI. Mike Schettino picked up the win by pitching 6.1 innings and giving up two runs on three hits with four strikeouts for the Chargers (14-16, 7-8 NE-10).

The home team opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth as Jack Zagaja, PJ Contreras and Grzenda hit three-straight run scoring singles to take a 4-0 lead.

The Hawks cut the deficit in half in the top of the seventh as Allan McQuarrie singled to right and came around to score on the double by Marculitis. Max Wadington followed with a single and Flynn worked a walk to load the bases. Ken Morrisino drove in Marculitis with a sac fly to left to make it a 4-2 game, but the Hawks would strand the two runners left on base.

After Robert Petrillo put the Chargers on top 5-2, the Hawks put two runners on in the top of the eighth after a Trabucco single and a walk McQuarrie, but came away empty handed as Marculitis grounded out to end the inning. Flynn reached base in the top of the ninth with a single to round out the day offensively for the Hawks.
