Men's tennis tops Saint Michael's behind five singles wins

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's tennis team used five singles wins to down Saint Michael's 6-3 in a Northeast-10 Conference match on Thursday afternoon at Saint Anselm Outdoor Tennis Courts.

Saint Michael's (1-9, 1-7 NE-10) took a 2-1 lead after doubles play on narrow wins at the top two positions. However, Saint Anselm (3-8, 2-4 NE-10) rebounded with wins at the No. 2 through No. 5 singles spots to claim the win.

In their first match as a pair this season, Brian Kavanagh and Alex Pearson posted an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Purple Knights got a 9-7 win from Ben Lambert and Hayden Steward at No. 1 doubles and a 9-8 victory from Sam Laves and Dan Foley at No. 2 doubles to take a lead into singles play.

Saint Anselm won the first five singles matches to finish to build an insurmountable lead. Kavanagh and Benji Page each picked up their sixth singles wins of the season to put the Hawks ahead 3-2. Kavanagh downed Steward 6-0, 6-3 at fourth singles, while Page topped Patrick Dietz 7-5, 6-3 at the sixth spot.

Daniel Kmetz provided the fourth point by taking down Laves 7-6 (6), 6-4 in two tight sets at third singles. The Hawks' clinching point came from Kyle Harris at No. 5 singles, as Harris rebounded from a tough first set to defeat Dan Foley 0-6, 6-0, 6-3.

With the team result decided, Adam Weinstein closed out Charlie Merry 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. In the only three-set match of the day, Lambert edged Eric Howes 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to give the Purple Knights' their lone singles point.

The Hawks host Stonehill at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 16.
