Men's tennis gets first win of season by downing AIC 8-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season by topping American International 8-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday afternoon at the Carr Center.

Saint Anselm (1-6, 1-2 NE-10) swept the three double matches and won three of the six singles matches in straight sets. American International (0-1, 0-1 NE-10) got a win from James Worrall at first singles but the Hawks picked up two singles wins in eight-game pro sets to claim the 8-1 victory.

The Hawks cruised through the three doubles matches, losing a combined four games over the three matches. Eric Howes and Kyle Harris teamed up for the first time this season and defeated Worrall and Luis Gouveia 8-2 at the top spot. Daniel Kmetz and Adam Weinstein downed Ricardo Martinze and Johno May by the same score at second doubles, while Chris Leighton and Robert Patenaude balnked Michael Schulze and Andrew DeBrincat 8-0 at third doubles.

Weinstein took down Martinez 7-5, 6-4 in two close sets at second singles for his second-straight win. Kmetz recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win over Gouveia at third singles and Benji Page picked up his fourth win of the season by a 6-0, 6-1 margin over Schulze at sixth singles.

Brian Kavanagh matched Page for the team lead with his fourth singles victory this season by virtue of an 8-0 triumph over Patrick Agit at fourth singles. Kyle Harris earned his first singles win by topping May 8-1 at fifth singles.

Worrall gave the Yellow Jackets a point with a hard-fought 7-6, 5-7, 10-6 victory over Howes at first singles.

The Hawks return to the court at Assumption on Thursday, March 31 for a 3 p.m. match.
