Men's lacrosse pulls away from Post in 20-10 win

WATERBURY, Conn. – For the second consecutive game to start the season, the Saint Anselm men's lacrosse team put 20 goals on the board to double up Post University 20-10 on Saturday at LaMoy Field.

Saint Anselm (2-0) led 7-4 at the break but outscored Post (3-3) by an 8-3 margin in the third to pull away for its second-straight win to open the season. After scoring five goals in the season opener, James Olsen again led the Hawks with three goals and two assists in the victory.

Dylan Ryan and Patrick Sweeney each tallied three goals, while Ben Warren added four points on two goals and two assists. Sweeney now has three goals in each of the team's two games this season.

Lucas DeAngelo improved to 2-0 by making six saves on 13 shots in 47:45 before giving way for James O'Neill, who also made six stops on nine shots in 12:15. The Hawks outshot the Eagles 39-22 in the game and held a 48-32 advantage in ground balls, led by 13 ground balls from Chris McCormack, who was also 21-for-32 on face-offs.

Post scored the game's first two goals but Saint Anselm responded with the next five to take a 5-2 lead near the midpoint of the second quarter. After the Eagles got within one at 5-4, Olsen and Xavier Quinn scored 27 seconds apart late in the first half to give the Hawks a 7-4 halftime lead.

Sweeney and Ryan found the back of the net 42 seconds apart early in the third to increase Saint Anselm's lead to 9-4. The Hawks would go on to add six more goals in the quarter from six different scorers to go to the fourth up 15-7.

The Hawks took their largest lead of the game at 17-7 inside the first three minutes of the fourth on goals by Warren and Ryan and led by at least eight the rest of the way. The teams combined for five goals in the space of 2:09 early in the fourth.

Luke McDermott led Post with three goals and Matthew Mazza chipped in with two. Three different players each recorded five ground balls for the Eagles. Rob Rohan took the loss by stopping 16-of-31 shots in 45:00. Shane Trost stopped 3-of-8 shots in the fourth.

The Hawks, ranked No. 5 in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Coaches' Poll, begin Northeast-10 Conference play at American International on Saturday, March 19 at 4 p.m.
