MANCHESTER, N.H. – The #2-seeded Saint Anselm College women's basketball team suffered a 71-52 setback to the #3-seeded University of New Haven on Sunday afternoon in the Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinals at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
The Hawks (18-9) now await word on a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament with the Selection Show coming on Sunday night. The Chargers (15-12) advance to the NE-10 Semifinals where they will meet the #1 seed from the Southwest, American International College on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.
Saint Anselm was led by 15 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks from Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.), while Ali Glennon (Bedford, N.H.) also chipped in 15 points. Candace Andrews (Boston, Mass.) added nine points, four assists, and a pair of steals, with Caitlyn Abela (North Easton, Mass.) scoring eight points and also swiping two steals. Kaila Duarte (Dorchester, Mass.) grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds in the setback.
New Haven's Lauren Hebert led the Chargers with a double-double of 29 points, 14 rebounds, two assists, three blocks, and two steals. Briana Bradford scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds to go with four assists, while Alexandria Kerr had 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
The Chargers jumped out to an early 12-4 lead following a Kerr jumper before Abela answered with back-to-back triples in the corner to cut the deficit to only 12-10. Kaila Duarte went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to make it a one point game, but a Hebert jumper at the 1:13 mark put New Haven on top 20-15. Vonleh and Andrews each scored in the closing minute of the period to make it a 21-19 lead after one quarter.
An Andrews layup with 6:36 to play in the second quarter pulled the Hawks back to within one at 26-25 and Glennon canned a triple that tied the game at 28-all with 4:54 remaining in the half. Glennon hit another three nearly two minutes later to put the Hawks on top 31-30 and Andrews kept it a one point advantage with a pair of free throws. New Haven scored the final two baskets of the half, however, to take a 36-33 lead into the break.
The Hawks opened the third quarter on an 8-2 run capped off by five-straight points from Glennon to grab their largest lead of the game at 41-38 with 7:09 to play in the quarter. The Chargers responded with an 8-0 run of their own to go up 46-41 before Raquel Johnson (Inglewood, Calif.) scored inside to stop the run and keep the Hawks within three at 46-43.
After four-straight points from Hebert, Samnell Vonleh knocked down two free throws to make it a 50-45 game with 1:08 to play. Hebert hit two freebies herself in the closing seconds of the quarter to give the Chargers a 52-45 lead headed into the final quarter.
New Haven controlled play in the final quarter, outscoring the Hawks 19-7 in the frame, to pull away for a 71-52 win to advance to the NE-10 Semifinals.
Saint Anselm shot 32.1% (17-of-53) from the floor in the game, including going 4-for-27 (14.8%) in the second half. New Haven shot 44.6% (25-of-56) in the game and held a 42-37 advantage in rebounds while also committing only eight turnovers to 15 for the Hawks.
