MANCHESTER, N.H. – No. 21 Saint Anselm College defeated the College of Saint Rose, 102-90, on Sunday afternoon in the Quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Basketball Tournament at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium in Manchester, N.H.
The #2-seeded Hawks (21-6) shot 60% (36-of-60) from the floor on the day while also knocking down 15-of-25 three-point attempts (60%). Saint Anselm held a 31-25 edge in rebounds, but dropped the turnover margin to the Golden Knights (13-14), committing nine turnovers to seven for Saint Rose.
Saint Anselm will host crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday night in an NE-10 Semifinal matchup at 7:00 p.m. The Penmen went on the road and defeated the Southwest Division's #1 seed, Southern Connecticut State, 107-104 in overtime on Sunday afternoon to earn a place in the Semifinals.
Five players scored in double figures for the Hawks, led by a career-high 22 points from Tim Guers (Langhorne, Pa.). Guers also added five rebounds, three assists and a block in the victory. Harrison Taggart (Wallingford, Vt.) poured in 18 points and grabbed a pair of steals, while Victor Joshua (New Haven, Conn.) had 17 points and seven assists.
Mike McCahey (Clarkstown, N.Y.) overcame early foul trouble to score 14 points and grab a team-high eight rebounds. Cody Ball (Londonderry, N.H.) chipped in 13 points and four rebounds off the bench, with Grant Mackay (North Berwick, Scotland) scoring eight points and Taylor Fortin (Tolland, Conn.) adding six of his own.
Saint Rose was led by a game-high 31 points and six rebounds from Tyler Sayre. Mical-Ryan Boyd added 23 points and Jamaal Greenwood came off the bench to pour in 16 of his own and hand out three assists.
Victor Joshua scored inside to give the Hawks an early 16-9 lead with 15:47 to play in the first half, but a layup from Boyd and a baseline jumper from Sayre cut the deficit to 16-13. Harrison Taggart knocked down a triple to put the Hawks back on top by six, but Sayre answered with another jumper to keep the Golden Knights within one possession.
Four-straight points from Grant Mackay followed by back-to-back threes from Cody Ball and a jumper from Taggart led to a 12-2 run for Saint Anselm that put the hosts in front 31-17. After Sayre scored, Taylor Fortin knocked down a three and the Hawks had another big push, scoring 12 of the next 16 points to take a commanding 43-23 lead with 6:43 to play in the half.
The Golden Knights made a late run at the end of the first stanza as Sayre converted a three-point play and Greenwood knocked down a triple in the closing seconds of the period to make it a 55-41 game headed into the break.
Another Harrison Taggart three with 14:08 to play put the Hawks on top at 73-49, their largest lead of the game. Saint Rose chipped away and a Jamaal Greenwood jumper with 11:44 remaining cut the deficit to 73-56. A 6-0 run by the Hawks that included four-straight points by McCahey gave the home team a 79-56 lead headed into the final 10 minutes of action.
The Hawk lead stayed above 20 points until a three from Mical-Ryan Boyd trimmed the cushion to 89-71. Tim Guers knocked down a three to keep the Hawks in front 95-74, but Saint Rose continued to fight and used an 8-2 run to pull within 15 at 97-82 with 2:30 remaining. Taggart nailed a three to put the game out of reach with 2:10 remaining in regulation, as the Golden Knights scored eight of the final 10 points in the game to give the contest its final score of 102-90.
