Men's tennis falls to Endicott in spring opener

MANCHESTER, N.H. – In its first match of the spring season, the Saint Anselm College men's tennis team was edged by Endicott College 5-4 on Friday afternoon at the Carr Center.

Endicott (2-3) got out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play and got a split of the three singles matches with Saint Anselm (0-6). The Hawks' lone doubles point came from Adam Weinstein (Vernon Rockville, Conn.) and Daniel Kmetz (Hebron, Conn.) at No. 2 doubles, where the pair topped Eric Pierce and Keaton McCleary 8-5. Kyle Harris (North Reading, Mass.) and Robert Patenaude (Augusta, Maine) lost a tiebreaker in their match against Sean McAndrews and Matthew Doherty at third doubles.

The Gulls built a 4-1 lead after straight-set wins at first and third singles from Chris Kirkpatrick and Michael Dolph, before the Hawks tied it at 4-4 with three wins. Weinstein battled past Pierce 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, Brian Kavanagh (Wilbraham, Mass.) picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ozan Cermik at the No. 5 spot and Robert Patenaude cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Anthony Rinaldi at the No. 6 spot.

The match came down to the match at fourth singles between McAndrews and Harris. Harris fought back after losing the first 6-3 to take the second by the same score, only to fall 10-6 in a match tiebreaker.

Saint Anselm is off until a home conference match against American International on Saturday, March 19.
