NEWPORT, R.I. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team improved to 19-5 overall with a 6-0 victory at Salve Regina University on Friday night in New England Hockey Conference action in Newport, R.I. The Hawks improve to 13-3 in the NEHC with the win, while the Seahawks fall to 10-12-2 and 8-7-1 in conference games.
Saint Anselm held a 59-11 advantage in shots on goal and converted 2-of-5 power plays, while killing off a pair of penalties in the win.
Alison Butler (Danvers, Mass.) opened the scoring that proved to be the eventual game-winner for the Hawks with an unassisted tally only 1:44 into the opening period. Victoria Shea (Middleton, Mass.) entered the scoring column just under 10 minutes later on assists from Meaghan Spurling (Byfield, Mass.) and Jackie Guy (St. Louis, Mo.) as Saint Anselm took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
In the second period, the Hawks pulled away with four goals in the stanza to cruise to the victory. Alex Starzyk (Enfield, Conn.) scored first on the power play with Sarah Geisinger (Willoughby, Ohio) and Martha Findley (Duxbury, Mass.) picking up assists on the tally. Alison Quinn (Canton, Mass.) extended the lead to 4-0 with her ninth goal of the season less than five minutes later as Butler and Shea assisted on the play.
Jackie Guy recorded her second point of the night with a goal 15:15 into the second period, and Starzyk capped off the night with her second goal of the game to finish out the scoring. Butler and Quinn were awarded assists on Guy's goal, while Samantha Boyer (St. Paul, Minn.) and Kaitlyn Spillane (Franklin, Mass.) added assists on Starzyk's tally.
Hannah Synnott (Montclair, N.J.) earned her eighth shutout and 17th win of the season while stopping all 11 shots she faced on the night. Salve Regina's Jennifer O'Connell made 53-of-59 saves while falling to 6-2 this year.
The Hawks wrap up the regular season tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Manhattanville College for a 3:00 p.m. game in NEHC action.
