BOSTON, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team fell behind early and could not overcome #9/10 UMass Boston as the Beacons defeated the Hawks, 6-2, on Saturday afternoon in New England Hockey Conference action in Boston, Mass.
The Hawks wrap up the regular season at 11-11-3 overall and 6-9-3 in the NEHC, while UMass Boston claims the NEHC regular season title at 18-4-3 overall and 14-2-2 in league games. The Hawks will host a Northeast-10 Conference playoff game next Saturday, February 20, at 4:00 p.m.
UMass Boston scored all four goals in the opening period as Albee Daley, Mike Thomson, Jeremy Finger, and Matt Lemire all tallied scores in the first stanza. Frankie DeAugustine made it a 5-0 lead for the home team only 6:27 into the second period.
Peter Sikalis (Acton, Mass.) entered the scoring column for the Hawks at the 10:49 mark of the second frame to make it a 5-1 game. The Beacons responded less than a minute later with a short-handed tally from Finger.
Thomas O'Brien (Cohasset, Mass.) scored his first career goal to round out the scoring in the game, with Kevin Dazkevich (West Hartford, Conn.) and Trevor Kacz (Dighton, Mass.) picking up assists.
UMass Boston held a 43-20 advantage in shots for the game while the two teams combined to go 0-for-5 on the power play. Shane Joyce (Pembroke, Mass.) suffered the setback allowing four goals while making 8-of-12 saves in 15:23 of ice time. Colin Soucy (North Andover, Mass.) made 18-of-20 stops in 33:44 of ice time, while Brenden Cain (Coppell, Texas) wrapped up the game stopping all 11 shots he faced in 10:53. Billy Faust picked up the win for the Beacons while stopping 18-of-20 shots.
