#19 Men's basketball cruises to 93-58 win over Assumption

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Four players recorded double-figures in scoring and 11-of-13 players that checked into the game scored at least one point as the #19 Saint Anselm College men's basketball snapped a two game skid with a 93-58 win over Assumption on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Stoutenbugh Gymnasium.

Harrison Taggart (Wallingford, Vt.) led the Hawks (18-4, 13-4 NE-10) with 19 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Cody Ball (Londonderry, N.H.) tied a career-high with 16 points to go with five rebounds, while Mike McCahey (Clarkstown, N.Y.) scored 15 points and grabbed a game-high eight boards.

Chris Braley (Newport, Maine) added 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists, with Victor Joshua (New Haven, Conn.) chipping eight points, three rebounds, seven assists, and three steals.

Assumption (6-16, 2-15 NE-10) got 12 points from Mat Sulda, who knocked down 4-of-6 triples, while Tre Owens and Kamali Bey added 11 points apiece. Justin Tuckson came off the bench to score six points and added a team-high six rebounds.

Saint Anselm shot 54.1% (33-of-61) from the floor while knocking down 8-of-19 (42.1%) of their threes. The Greyhounds shot 41.5% (22-of-53) from the floor, but committed 21 turnovers in the game leading to 30 points off turnovers for the Hawks.

The home team opened the game hitting their first five shots from the field before a pair of Chris Braley free throws at the 15:53 mark gave Saint Anselm a 12-5 lead. Mike McCahey and Braley followed with baskets to extend the lead to 16-5, and Victor Joshua eventually knocked down a free throw to put the Hawks on top 20-8. Assumption answered with a jumper from Julian Aiken and a triple from Mat Sulda to pull back within seven at 20-13.

The teams traded blows until a jumper from Declan Soukup and a free throw from Kamali Bey cut the deficit to only 27-21 with 7:53 to play in the first half. A 7-0 run by the Hawks capped off by a Tim Guers (Langhorne, Pa.) layup extended the lead back to 36-21, and after the Greyhounds cut it to 11 with 3:08 to play, Saint Anselm used a 7-3 run to end the half and take a 45-30 lead into the break.

Harrison Taggart and Julian Aiken traded threes in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Hawks used a 13-4 run – capped by another Taggart three – to take a 61-37 lead with 12:37 to play. Reilly Reid cut the deficit to only 22 with a layup, but Cody Ball answered right back with a layup of his own to keep it a 24-point advantage.

Ball later gave the Hawks a 31 point lead with a triple, and the freshman converted a layup on the fast break to give the Hawks their largest lead of the game at 88-49 with 4:24 to play. Ryan Hartung (Haverhill, Mass.) and Kyle Green (Woodbury Heights, N.J.) would each add baskets in the closing minutes of the game, while Andrew Murphy (Franklin, Mass.) went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to close out the 93-58 victory.

The Hawks return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Saint Michael's College for a 3:30 p.m. game in NE-10 action. Saint Anselm tied a program-record for threes in a game (20) in their last meeting in November, a 101-69 win for the Hawks in Manchester, N.H.
