GORHAM, Maine – The Saint Anselm College men's hockey team used a three-goal third period to complete a two-win weekend with a 4-1 road victory over the University of Southern Maine in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) play on Saturday afternoon at USM Ice Arena.
Box Score
Four different players scored for Saint Anselm (5-4-0, 3-3-0 NEHC), beginning with Trey Aiello, who tallied a second period goal to erase a 1-0 Southern Maine (5-6-0, 2-5-0 NEHC) lead after one period. The Hawks got goals from Brendon Kerrigan, Mike Ferraro and Vin D'Amato in the third period to secure the win.
The Huskies held a 10-6 advantage in shots in the opening 20 minutes and the pressure paid off with a Tyler Mathieu goal off a rebound of his own shot at 7:46 that put the hosts in front.
The Hawks pulled even early in the second period as Aiello lit the lamp for the fifth-straight game, redirecting a shot by Lawrence Taylor IV at 1:28. The goal was Aiello's sixth of the season, all in the last seven games, which ties him for the team lead with Jeremy Carignan.
Saint Anselm had a pair of power-play opportunities in the second period after Aiello's goal. However, the game went to the third tied at a goal apiece despite the Hawks outshooting the Huskies 17-4 in period two.
In the third, Kerrigan wasted little time putting the Hawks on top, collecting a pass from CJ Blaszkaan dbeating USM goaltender Kyle Shapire from the left-wing circle over the right shoulder. A little over five minutes later, Ferraro scored his third goal of the weekend, unassisted on the power play, to give Saint Anselm a two-goal cushion after intercepting an errant clearing attempt and firing the puck into an open net.
Trailing by two, Southern Maine pulled its goaltender in search of a comeback but D'Amato ended any hope of a late rally with an empty-net goal with 1:55 remaining. Brian Cameron assisted D'Amato's empty-netter.
Shane Joyce stopped 19-of-20 shots to record his fifth victory of the season, while Shapiro made 30 saves for the Huskies while falling to 4-4-0. After being outshot in the first period, the Hawks held a 28-10 advantage in shots over the final two periods, as the final count ended 34-20.
Saint Anselm returns to its home ice to face NEHC opponent New England College on Friday, Dec. 9. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
