Men's hockey rides three-goal first period to first win of season

SALEM, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College men's hockey team rode a three-goal first period to a 6-2 win at No. 15 Salem State for the team's first win of the season on Tuesday evening at Rockett Ice Arena.

Justin Longo and Jeremy Carignan each scored for Saint Anselm (1-2-0) in the three-goal first period and finished the night with two goals apiece. Brendon Kerrigan, Trevor Kacz, Bryan Green and Brian Cameron each tallied two assists for the Hawks, while CJ Blasczka and Trey Aiello scored in the win over Salem State (1-1), which was ranked No. 15 in this week's D3hockey.com poll.

Saint Anselm peppered the Salem State net with seven shots in the first four minutes and was rewarded for the early pressure with the opening goal from Carignan at 4:29 of the first period. Carignan took pass from Green on the right boards and fired a shot past Jason Pucciarelli from the middle.

The Hawks made it 2-0 at 12:24 of the opening period on Blasczka's first goal of the season, as the senior netted a power-play goal from Green and Kerrigan, who each earned their second assists of the night. Before the first 20 minutes were up, Longo gave Saint Anselm a 3-0 advantage from Kacz and Cameron.

After Salem State got a goal back from Dan Holland on the power play at 4:27 of the second, Aiello grabbed his first collegiate goal off a Kacz assist a little over two minutes later. The teams traded goals nine seconds apart later in the second with Longo giving the Hawks a short-lived 5-1 lead prior to a Michael Casale goal for the Vikings.

The only goal of the final period was an empty-netter from Carignan with 4:03 remaining.

Shane Joyce earned the win by making 28 saves for Saint Anselm, while Pucciarelli made 30 stops in the loss for Salem State. Shots for the game ended 36-30 in favor of the Hawks.

The Vikings were penalized nine times for 29 minutes, compared to six times for 12 minutes for the Hawks. Saint Anselm was 1-for-6 on the power play, while Salem State was 1-for-4.

Saint Anselm plays its home opener against Norwich on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
