Volleyball to host playoff match despite Senior Day setback

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-10, 25-16, 25-16) loss to Northeast-10 regular season champion Le Moyne on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.

Box Score

Amanda Williams led Saint Anselm (20-7, 10-4 NE-10) with 10 kills but Le Moyne (22-5, 12-2 NE-10) had four players in double figures in kills and hit .310 as a team on the afternoon. The Dolphins clinched the NE-10 regular season title outright with the win, while the Hawks will be seeded fourth in their first postseason appearance since 2004 and will host their first playoff match since 1996.

Prior to the match, Saint Anselm honored seniors Brennah Gladwill and CC Chrisom for their contributions to the volleyball program over the last four years. Chrisom ranks seventh in program history in career digs (1,113), while Gladwill is just outside the top-10 in kills, kills per set and points per set.

Anna Hafoka tallied 12 kills and hit .588 to lead the way for Le Moyne, while Andrea Buchanan, Jessica Miller and Natalie Casson each had 11 kills. Kendall Corcoran added 44 assists, nine digs, four kills and two aces.

Williams, who hit .350 in the match, was the only Saint Anselm player in double figures in kills. Katy Teets registered seven, while Catherine McCarthy, Madison Sollows and Gladwill each had six. Jewel Hays handed out 28 assists and Chrisom led the defense with 12 digs.

Saint Anselm hit .343 in the opening set on its way to taking a 1-0 lead. The Hawks broke an 8-8 tie with a quick 4-1 run and maintained the lead until the Dolphins rallied to even the set at 20-20 with a 4-0 spurt. Le Moyne claimed just its second lead of the set at 23-22 but Saint Anselm won the final three points to seal the set, as McCarthy had a kill and combined with Sollows for a block on the final two points.

The Dolphins raced out to a 9-2 lead at the start of the second set and led by at least 10 the rest of the way thanks to a .421 attack percentage. The third set was a similar story, as Le Moyne took 10 of the first 12 points and maintained a lead of at least six for the rest of the set to go up 2-1.

Le Moyne again started the fourth quickly, opening up a 9-2 lead for the third-straight set. Trailing 17-6, Saint Anselm mounted a brief rally by winning three-straight points but the Dolphins recovered to close out the victory.

Saint Anselm will host fifth-seeded Adelphi in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Championship on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. The Panthers swept the Hawks in the regular season meeting in Garden City, N.Y. on Nov. 5.
