Daly leads hot-shooting Women's Basketball to 99-57 win over Mercy

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team set a new program for three-pointers in a game, knocking down 17-of-29 (58.6%) of their triples in a 99-57 win over Mercy College on Saturday afternoon at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium in Manchester, N.H.

Emma Daly had a career day, knocking down 9-of-13 three-pointers en route to a career-best 27 points to lead Saint Anselm (1-0). Daly's nine triples were also a program record, and she added a pair of rebounds and a block in the win. Caitlyn Abela was also feeling it from deep as she connected on 5-of-6 three-balls and 6-of-8 shots in the game to add 17 points.

Michaela Martin came off the bench to score 13 points to go with eight rebounds and four assists, while Clairee Putnam had 11 points and six assists. Candace Andrews handed out a game-high eight assists, with Kaila Duarte hauling in a game-best 10 rebounds for the Hawks. Erin Waters also chipped in seven points, nine boards and three blocks.

The Hawks shot 56.3% (36-of-64) from the field, while holding the Mustangs (0-1) to just 27.6% (21-of-76) shooting on the night. The Hawks controlled the glass, winning the rebounding battle 58-34, but had 20 turnovers to just nine for Mercy. Saint Anselm scored 36 points in the paint and had 16 points on the fast break.

Saint Anselm wasted no time putting the game away early as the Hawks outscored Mercy 37-12 in the opening 10 minutes of action. Abela knocked down 3-of-4 three-pointers, while Emma Daly knocked down all three of her attempts in the frame. Ali Glennon also chipped in six points in eight minutes of action.

The Hawks kept up the pressure in the second period as a pair of Clairee Putnam free throws made it a 58-15 game with 3:40 to play in the half. However, Mercy ended the stanza on a 9-1 run to make it a 59-24 game headed into the break.

In the third quarter, Sarah Messler led the Hawks with five points, while Daly and Putnam each knocked down triples to help Saint Anselm to a 75-31 lead at the end of the period.

Michaela Martin converted an offensive rebound with 8:10 to play in the game to give the Hawks their largest lead of the day at 82-34, and the Hawks cruised to their first win of the season, falling just one point shy of the century mark, with the 99-57 victory.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host the University of the District of Columbia at 1:30 p.m. in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
