NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The #9-ranked Saint Anselm College men's basketball team overcame a six-point halftime deficit to rally for a 76-68 victory at the University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action in New Haven, Conn.
The Hawks have now won three-straight games to improve to 17-2 overall and 12-2 in the NE-10. New Haven falls to 6-14 and 3-11 in league games with the setback.
Mike McCahey (Clarkstown, N.Y.) posted a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead four players in double-figures for Saint Anselm. Chris Braley (Newport, Maine) added 17 points, four rebounds and two blocks, while Harrison Taggart (Wallingford, Vt.) had 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Victor Joshua (New Haven, Conn.) chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds, and six assists in the victory.
New Haven was led by 27 points from Jemal Mosley, while Levy Gillespie added 10 points off the bench. Samir McDaniels and Michael Bourke scored eight points apiece, with McDaniels grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
The Hawks shot 52.8% (28-of-53) from the field and won the rebounding battle 33-27. New Haven shot 46.8% (29-of-62) from the floor and committed only 10 turnovers to 13 for Saint Anselm.
McCahey knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game at 15-all with 11:37 to play in the opening half, and he later tied the game with a jumper at 24-24 just under six minutes later. Harrison Taggart nailed a triple to put the Hawks on top 27-26 with 4:47 to play, but the Chargers ended the half on an 8-1 run to grab a 34-28 lead headed into the break.
An 8-2 run by the Hawks to open the second period tied the game at 36-36 as Harrison Taggart converted inside, but five-straight points from New Haven put the Chargers on top 41-36. Jemal Mosley converted back-to-back layups to put New Haven back on top 48-42 with 14:26 to play.
Tim Guers (Langhorne, Pa.) started the rally for the Hawks as he scored inside and later added a free throw to cut the deficit in half. Victor Joshua buried a three to tie the game at 48-48, and he followed that up with a three-point play to go up 51-48 with 11:50 remaining. The two teams battled back and forth, and New Haven pulled ahead at 56-55 after a pair of Joshua Guddemi free throws.
Chris Braley nailed a three and followed that up with a layup inside as he sparked an 11-4 run to put the Hawks on top 71-64 with 3:32 to play in regulation. The Chargers cut the deficit to only three headed into the final minute of play, but the Hawks went 5-for-6 at the charity stripe down the stretch to hang on for the 76-68 victory.
Saint Anselm resumes their three game road trip on Wednesday night when the Hawks travel to Franklin Pierce University for a 7:30 p.m. game in Northeast-10 Conference action.
