Women's hoops pulls away early and cruises past Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating Le Moyne College 64-51 on Tuesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action in Syracuse, N.Y.

The Hawks improve to 8-6 overall and 5-5 in the NE-10 with the win, while the Dolphins fall to 7-8 and 4-5 in league games.

Caitlyn Abela (North Easton, Mass.) knocked down five three-pointers and led all scorers with 17 points on the night. Ali Glennon (Bedford, N.H.) hit 6-of-8 shots including 4-of-5 triples en route to 16 points, while Raquel Johnson (Inglewood, Calif.) added 12 points and five rebounds. Kaila Duarte (Dorchester, Mass.) grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds in the victory, and Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) picked up three blocks.

Le Moyne was led by Ellie Leszyk's 10 points, while Joana Dobrovosky and Vandell Andrade chipped in eight points apiece.

Raquel Johnson gave the Hawks an early 7-3 lead in the first quarter and a jumper from the senior nearly three minutes later put Saint Anselm on top 11-7 with 3:22 to play. The Hawks ended the quarter on an 8-0 run on baskets from Caitlyn Abela (North Easton, Mass.) and five points from Ali Glennon (Bedford, N.H.) to take a 19-7 lead at the end of one.

Back-to-back threes from Abela and Glennon extended the advantage to 25-9 and forced a Le Moyne timeout, and two more threes from Abela gave the Hawks their largest lead of the half at 34-13 with 5:35 remaining. The Dolphins fought their way back into the game, ending the half on a 10-3 run to trail 37-23 headed into the break.

Le Moyne's Joana Dobrovosky would score the first basket of the half for the Dolphins, but the Hawks would dominate play in the third quarter as Ashley Briggs (Scarborough, Maine) nailed a jumper to give Saint Anselm a 55-33 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter. The Hawks outscored Le Moyne 18-12 in the quarter and held a 55-35 advantage headed into the final 10 minutes of the game.

Ali Glennon kept it a 22-point game with a triple at the 6:38 mark of the fourth quarter, and Le Moyne made one final push, going on an 11-2 run over the next five minutes of play to cut the deficit to only 62-49. Briggs knocked down a pair of free throws in the final minute, and Le Moyne scored one more basket before the final horn to give the game its final score of 64-51.

Saint Anselm shot 24-of-53 (45.3%) from the field on the night including a 9-of-18 showing from beyond the arc. The Hawks won the rebounding battle 39-27 but committed 11 turnovers to just six for the Dolphins.

The Hawks return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Southern Connecticut State University at 1:30 p.m. at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
