Volleyball Holds off Queens in Sunday Sweep

QUEENS, N.Y. – Junior Brennah Gladwill (Citrus Heights, Calif.) recorded a match-high 12 kills and three blocks as the Saint Anselm swept Queens College (N.Y.) Saturday afternoon 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

• Gladwill's 12-kill effort came on a blistering .476 hitting clip—also a match-high among attackers. She also added a pair of service aces for Saint Anselm.
• Sophomore Katy Teets (Dix Hills, N.Y.) added seven kills and classmate Amanda Williams (North Andover, Mass.) added six on the afternoon.
• Freshman Jewel Hays (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) recorded 28 assists to complement four digs and two service aces.
• Junior CC Chrisom (Dover, N.H.) a team-high nine digs and added a service ace and sophomore Danielle Isbell (Poway, Calif.) added seven digs for the Hawks.
• Queens' Else Buchmiller led the Knights with 10 kills and 11 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Saint Anselm jumped out to a 19-12 lead off incredibly efficient hitting in the opening frame before the Knights rallied back with an 8-2 run to close to within one point. Kills by Williams, Teets and Gladwill would eventually stave off the pesky hosts, taking a tight decision 25-23.
• The Hawks again leaped out to an early 8-2 lead before Queens reeled off seven straight points to take a 9-8 advantage. Saint Anselm then settled in offensively and took advantage of a handful of Knight errors to creep ahead late, with kills by Gladwill, Hays and Teets handing the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
• In a spitting image of the first two sets, the Hawks raced to an early 6-0 lead before Queens chipped away, using a 5-point run to close to within 19-18. The teams traded kills before Gladwill gave Saint Anselm its first match point of the year. Finally, the set ended on a Queens hitting error, handing the Hawks a much-needed early-season Sunday sweep.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Saint Anselm vastly improved its offensive efficiency Sunday, hitting .232 for the match against Queens that included a .320 team percent in the third set alone. The Knights, meanwhile, hit just .082 as a squad.
• The Hawks also won the blocking battle, garnering five total blocks—including a solo stuff by Teets—to just three for Queens.
• Ten different Hawks recorded a dig Sunday afternoon as Saint Anselm outdug Queens 37-30.

NOTES

• Saint Anselm improves to 2-1 all-time against Queens in the series history. All three matchups have come since the 2012 season.

UP NEXT

• Saint Anselm will battle crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University in its home opener Wednesday in a 7 p.m. start at Stoutenburgh Gym, also opening up the Queen City Cup challenge for the second straight season. The Hawks will then take to the road four seven matches to finish out the month of September.
