MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomores Jess Perkins (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Meghan Golden (Scituate, Mass.), as well as senior Leah Fitzgerald (Bedford, N.H.), all captured a pair of matches to lead the Saint Anselm College women's tennis team to a 7-2 victory against Plymouth State University in its season opener Sunday afternoon at the Saint Anselm Outdoor Tennis Courts.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Perkins was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at No. 1 singles as she handed senior Zara Jakubas, who entered the day at 15-0 lifetime, the first loss of her career. Perkins has now won seven straight and 11 of 12 dating back to last year. Perkins also teamed with Golden for an 8-2 win against Jakubas and Kelley Corson at No. 1 doubles.
- Golden earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Corson at No. 3 singles.
- Fitzgerald defeated Irene Ireme, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 5 singles and combined with junior Katie Roberts (So. Windsor, Conn.) to pull out a 9-8 (7-5) No. 3 doubles win against Ireme and Megan Wheeler.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks led 3-0 after sweeping the doubles matches, which included an 8-4 No. 2 win by sophomore Ashley Sulkin (Ipswich, Mass.) and freshman Tess Malerbi (Scituate, Mass.) against Sunny Jakubas and Rachel Gustafson.
- Saint Anselm then captured four of the six singles matches, including a 6-3, 6-0 No. 4 singles victory for senior Kathryn Rindo (Lowell, Mass.) over Rachel Gustafson.
NOTES
- The Hawks win their season opener for the first time since 2011.
- The Hawks snap Plymouth State's 13-match regular-season winning streak as they hand the Panthers their first regular-season defeat since 2013.
