Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Completes Impressive Weekend With 5-1 Win Against Dowling

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Seniors Colleen Sears (Danvers, Mass.) and Meagan Halligan (No. Branford, Conn.) each scored a pair of goals to lead the Saint Anselm College field hockey team to a 5-1 victory against Dowling College on a scorching Sunday afternoon at Grappone Stadium.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Sears, who scored a goal in Saturday's 9-0 rout of Saint Thomas Aquinas, also added an assist against the Golden Lions for a team-high five points.
  • Halligan followed up her one-goal, one-assist performance Saturday with the two goals against Dowling.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Just like Saturday, Halligan put the Hawks on the board with the game's first goal just 8:40 in.
  • Sears followed with two straight goals, including one just 1:29 before the half to send the Hawks into the locker room with a 3-0 advantage.
  • Halligan would give Saint Anselm complete control with her second of the day just 1:02 into the second stanza.
  • The contest stayed that way until early in the 59th minute when Dowling made it onto the scoresheet as Summer Carson beat freshman goalkeeper Sarah Bentley (Acton, Mass.).

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Junior goalkeeper Katherine Sears (Northboro, Mass.) started and made two saves over the first 48:49 of action before giving way to Bentley.
  • Ariana Ovadia stopped nine of the 12 shots she faced in the opening period for Dowling, while Laura Pouplier turned away seven of the nine shots that came her way in the second half.
  • Saint Anselm owned a 27-3 advantage in shots, including 17-2 in the first half, and was on the positive side of a 10-1 gap in penalty corners.

NOTES

  • The Hawks begin the year 2-0 for the second straight season.
  • Sophomore Katie Neyland (Boxborough, Mass.) notched the first goal of her collegiate career to cap the scoring in the 64th minute.
  • Freshman Brooke Haskell (Winslow, Maine) assisted Sears' first goal – the Hawks' second of the game – to pick up her first collegiate point.
  • Freshman Anna Drakeley (Woodbury, Conn.) added an assist against Dowling, just one day after registering her first collegiate point with an assist against Saint Thomas Aquinas. Drakely becomes the first player in program history since Bridget Davis (Sept. 2-6, 2011) to record at least one point in each of her first two career games.
  • Kate Sears has not allowed a goal over the first 83:49 of action to start the season.
  • On the weekend, Saint Anselm outscored its opponents 14-1, outshot them 45-4 and owned a 25-1 margin in penalty corners. The 14 goals are the most over any two-game span in program history.

UP NEXT

  • The Hawks return to action Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 7:15 p.m. when they play host to Assumption College at Grappone.
  • Saint Anselm is home for their first five games of the season and eight of their first 10.
