Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Collins' Late Goal Allows Field Hockey to Clip #10 Franklin Pierce, 3-2

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Erin Collins (Auburn, Mass.) scored with 12:58 remaining in the contest to snap a tie and lift the Saint Anselm College field hockey team to a 3-2 non-conference victory against 10th-ranked and previously-undefeated Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday evening at Grappone Stadium.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Collins, fellow sophomore Emma Kincaid (W. Bridgewater, Mass.) and senior Taylor Coons (Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.) all scored goals for the Hawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Saint Anselm missed a chance to draw first blood just 4:44 into the contest when Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Samantha Geils turned away a penalty stroke drive from senior Meagan Halligan (No. Branford, Conn.) with a terrific diving save to her right.
  • The Hawks would get on the board via the penalty stroke 15:29 later, however, as Kincaid went back to Geils' right side and this time put it past her into the back of the cage.
  • Franklin Pierce knotted things up just under five minutes into the second half with a penalty stroke goal of its own off the stick of Shannon O'Leary.
  • Coons put the Hawks back in front 3:50 later when sophomore Katie Neyland (Boxborough, Mass.) corralled the insert off a corner and sent a long blast from the top of the circle that was redirected into the goalmouth by Coons in front.
  • The Ravens again gained the equalizer midway through the 51st minute as Erin Smith sent a long drive from the top of the circle that deflected off Collins and past junior goalkeeper Katherine Sears (Northboro, Mass.).
  • Collins earned her revenge just 6:29 later when she inserted the ball off a corner and then poked in the loose ball at the left post after a Franklin Pierce defender had made a timely defensive save off a shot in close by sophomore Jamie McNamara (Auburn, Mass.).

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Sears made two saves for the Hawks, while Geils turned aside seven shots for the Ravens.
  • Saint Anselm held a 15-9 advantage in shots, while Franklin Pierce edged the Hawks in the penalty corner department, 11-10.

NOTES

  • Saint Anselm begins the season 3-0 for the first time in program history. The team's previous best starts to the year through three games were 2-1 marks in 2014 and 2003.
  • Franklin Pierce, which entered the NFHCA rankings at No. 10 earlier in the day with a 4-0 record, fall to 1-1 on the road this season, while Saint Anselm remains a perfect 3-0 at home.
  • Collins' goal is officially the first of her career as the game against Assumption, in which she scored for the first time, was suspended and will not go into the books until the completion of the contest Wednesday night.

UP NEXT

  • The Hawks return to action Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 7:15 p.m. when they finish their game against Assumption College that was suspended due to lightning on Sept. 9 at Grappone. Saint Anselm leads the Greyhounds, 3-1, with 20:59 remaining in the contest.
  • Saint Anselm is home for their first five games of the season and eight of their first 10.
