MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Colleen Sears (Danvers, Mass.) and sophomores Erin Collins (Auburn, Mass.) and Katie Neyland (Boxborough, Mass.) all scored goals to stake the Saint Anselm College field hockey team to a two-goal lead against Assumption College last Wednesday and, despite allowing a goal this Wednesday, the Hawks held on for a 3-2 victory at Grappone Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Prior to last Wednesday's contest being suspended due to lightning with 20:59 remaining, Collins put the Hawks on the board early in the sixth minute when she gathered the insert from senior Meagan Halligan (No. Branford, Conn.) off a corner and blasted it into the left side of the cage.
- Amanda Frank knotted the game just 57 seconds later in an almost mirror image of Collins' goal at the other end of the field.
- Sears snapped the tie late in the 24th minute as she buried a penalty stroke opportunity with a shot that went top shelf into the left corner of the net.
- Neyland added some insurance for the Hawks in the middle of the 43rd minute when her long shot from the right side of the circle took a hard bounce into right side of the goalmouth.
- The lightning then arrived and caused a 30-minute mandatory delay. When the inclement weather did not let up at the end of the delay, play was suspended.
- Assumption came out as the aggressor during the resumption of the contest, looking to make up its two-goal deficit. The Hawks held the Greyhounds at bay until early in the 66th minute when Sarah Frahm eliminated her defender, went one-on-one with the goalie and beat her five-goal to slice the lead in half.
- Saint Anselm then tightened things up for the remaining 4:57 and held off Assumption for the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Junior goalkeeper Katherine Sears (Northboro, Mass.) stopped six shots, while Bridget Boyle made five saves for the Greyhounds. Allison Juneau also recorded a pair of defensive stops for Assumption that helped keep the game tied early on.
- Assumption held an 11-10 edge in shots, including 7-0 during the resumption of the game, while Saint Anselm owned an 11-9 advantage in penalty corners.
NOTES
- Saint Anselm extends its program record-best start to 4-0.
