MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Sara McCarthy (No. Andover, Mass.) used her first career goal to put the Saint Anselm College field hockey team on the board and simultaneously open the flood gates as the Hawks scored three times over the final 25:37 to remain perfect on the season with a 3-1 victory against a dangerous Pace University squad in both teams' Northeast-10 openers at Grappone Stadium.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • McCarthy and fellow sophomores Allia Connolly (Westford, Mass.) and Emma Kincaid (W. Bridgewater, Mass.) all potted goals in the triumph.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Pace, in its first year as a program, but coming off a 3-2 double-overtime victory against fifth-ranked Long Island University-LIU Post on Wednesday, came out and punched Saint Anselm in the mouth as Katrina Mikitish scored just 1:33 in to stake the Setters to an early lead.
  • The game remained 1-0 with Pace controlling the majority of the action until McCarthy grabbed a pass from junior Rose Mooney (No. Attleborough, Mass.) on the right side of the circle and slapped a shot toward the net that deflected off a defender's stick and into the back of the cage to tie the game with 25:37 remaining.
  • Saint Anselm struck again less than 10 minutes later as senior Meagan Halligan (No. Branford, Conn.) drove down the left side of the field and dished the ball toward the middle as she reached the front of the net, where Connolly was able to sweep it in and put the Hawks up for good.
  • Kincaid added some insurance with 6:35 to go when she batted a bouncing ball off the stick of fellow sophomore Mia Vecchione (Chelmsford, Mass.) into net from right in front.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Junior goalkeeper Katherine Sears (Northboro, Mass.) stopped one shot, while Lesly Sanchez Alvarez made eight saves for the Setters.
  • Saint Anselm held a 14-6 advantage in shots and a 13-1 margin in penalty corners.

NOTES

  • Saint Anselm extends its program record-best start to 5-0.
  • Halligan has scored a point in four of the five contests so far this season.

UP NEXT

  • The Hawks return to action Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. when they hit the road for the first time this season to take a short trip across town and battle Southern New Hampshire University.
  • Saint Anselm, which is home for eight of its first 10 this season, is back at Grappone on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 5:30 p.m. when they play host to LIU Post on Homecoming..
