#9 Field Hockey Escapes SNHU with 2-1 Victory to Move to 6-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Mia Vecchione (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored with 3:02 remaining to lift the ninth-ranked Saint Anselm College field hockey team to Wednesday evening's 2-1 Queen City Cup win against Southern New Hampshire University at Larkin Field in the squad's first road contest of 2015.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • In addition to Vecchione's first of the season, fellow sophomore Jamie McNamara (Auburn, Mass.) also potted a goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • McNamara snapped a scoreless deadlock in the 25th minute when she deflected a shot from sophomore Emma Kincaid (W. Bridgewater, Mass.) past SNHU goalkeeper Jill Piacitelli.
  • Saint Anselm continued to pepper Piacitelli throughout the game, but could not add an insurance tally. That proved big as Cassidy Huckins found the back of the net for the Penmen with 8:20 on the clock to knot the game.
  • Vecchione allowed Saint Anselm to breathe a sigh of relief late in the 67th minute as she tipped in a blast from the top of the circle by sophomore Katie Neyland (Boxborough, Mass.) that eventually lifted the Hawks to victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Junior goalkeeper Katherine Sears (Northboro, Mass.) stopped one shot, while Piacitelli racked up 14 saves for SNHU.
  • Despite the 2-1 final, Saint Anselm held huge advantages in both shots (28-3) and penalty corners (24-3).

NOTES

  • The Hawks, who entered the National Field Hockey Coaches Association national poll for the second time ever Tuesday, extend their program record-best start to 6-0 (2-0 NE-10).
  • The win ties up the Queen City Cup standings, 1-1.

UP NEXT

  • The Hawks are back in action Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. when they travel to take on Assumption College.
  • Saint Anselm, which is home for eight of its first 10 contests this season, returns to Grappone Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 5:30 p.m. when it plays host to Long Island University-LIU Post on Homecoming.
