Bentley Squeezes Past Women's Tennis, 5-4

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Jess Perkins (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and freshman Tess Malerbi (Scituate, Mass.) each grabbed a pair of victories, but the Saint Anselm College women's tennis team was narrowly edged by Bentley University, 5-4, Thursday afternoon at the Saint Anselm Outdoor Tennis Courts.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Perkins pretty easily defeated Ludmila Yamus at No. 1 singles as she continued her torrid streak. Perkins has now won 11 straight No. 1 singles matches and 15 of 16 dating back to last year. Perkins also teamed with fellow sophomore Meghan Golden (Scituate, Mass.) for an 8-3 No. 1 doubles win against Yamus and Rachel Petrini. Combining both singles and doubles play, Perkins, who is a perfect 4-0 in both singles and doubles this season, is a red-hot 17-2 since Oct. 4, 2014.
  • Malerbi won Saint Anselm's only other singles match as she downed Catherine Gianino, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. Malerbi has captured three straight singles matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Saint Anselm led, 2-1, following doubles play and owned a commanding 4-1 advantage following the Perkins and Malerbi victories.
  • Bentley then won three straight singles matches to even the contest at 4-all, before capturing the decisive No. 4 singles match, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

  • The Hawks return to action Saturday, Sept. 19 when they take part in the ITA East Regional Tournament at the Legacy Tennis Center in Philadelphia, Pa.
