Hudon, Balanced Offense Lead Baseball to Split with Assumption

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – Sophomore Jon McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) and junior Ken Morrisino (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) each knocked in two runs and junior Tom Hudon (Merrimack, N.H.) recorded his second straight victory in game one as the Saint Anselm College baseball team halved a Thursday doubleheader with Assumption College at the New England Baseball Complex. Saint Anselm took the first game, 10-4, before falling in game two, 12-4.

The Hawks move to 6-12 overall, including 3-2 in Northeast-10 play and 2-2 in the Northeast Division, while the Greyhounds send their record to 4-14, 1-3 NE-10, 1-1 NE-10 NE.

After Hudon was able to work out of a jam unscathed with a runner on third and one out in the bottom of the first of game one, his offense rewarded him by hanging a four-spot in the top of the second. Senior Joe Morin (Salem, N.H.) began the frame with a double to center before sophomore Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Mass.) was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved into scoring position following a sacrifice bunt from freshman John Marculitis (Shrewsbury, Mass.).

The offense then kept rolling as a single through the left side from freshman Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J.), a double to center by McQuarrie, a bunt single from sophomore Matthew Flynn (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and a single through the left side from Morrisino each plated a run to stake Saint Anselm to a 4-0 lead.

The Hawks added another in the third as Morin again opened the inning with a double – this one down the left field line – before Marculitis was hit by a pitch and Carpenter walked to load the bases with one out. McQuarrie lined a sac fly to right to make it 5-0. The Hawks would re-load the bases with two outs, but kept the bags packed.

Assumption answered with three in the bottom of the inning as a two-run single to left from Tom Paine and an RBI single to left-center from Mike Coggeshall trimmed the deficit to 5-3.

Saint Anselm chased Assumption starter Steve Flynn in the fifth as Bragole and Marculitis led off the stanza with back-to-back home runs to left that bumped the lead to 7-3. The Hawks added two more in the sixth on RBI singles from senior Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) and Morin.

Morrisino's sac fly to center in the seventh made it a seven-run game before the Greyhounds tacked on one in the ninth against the bullpen on a two-out double to left by Greg O'Donnell.

Hudon (2-3) put together his second straight solid start as he allowed three runs on 11 hits over 6.0 innings, while fanning eight and walking just one. Junior Tyler Buck (Franklin, Mass.) continued his stellar throwing out of the 'pen (1.69 ERA over last 10.2 innings), tossing a pair of shutout innings, scattering two hits and striking out one. Freshman Luke Nerney (Guilford, Conn.) was charged with a run on a walk in 0.1 innings, while junior Terrence Walsh (Milton, Mass.) retired the only batter he faced and freshman Andy Williams (Merrimack, N.H.) gave up a hit in 0.1 innings.

Morin went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while McQuarrie (two RBI, two runs) and Morrisino (two RBI, run) were both 2-for-4. Flynn went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

In game two, the Hawks moved out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Marculitis singled through the right side and scored on Carpenter's double to left. Saint Anselm doubled its lead with an unearned run in the top of the fourth as Bragole reached on a fielding error, moved to second on a Marculitis sac bunt and scored on Carpenter's single to left.

Assumption tied it in the bottom half, however, when Andrew Jaehnig hit a two-run jack to right-center and then moved ahead, 3-2, in the fifth when Coggeshall reached on a two-out fielding error that brought home Matt Murphy, who led off the frame with a base hit.

Hayden pulled the Hawks back into a tie at 3-3 with a solo shot to left in the top of the eighth, but Assumption exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the inning – highlighted by a grand slam to center by Coggeshall – to break open a 12-3 advantage.

The Hawks added one in the ninth when freshman Max Wadington (Burlington, Conn.) reached on a fielding error with two outs and the bases loaded.

Sophomore Joseph Levasseur (Rowley, Mass.) started and allowed three runs – two earned – on six hits, while striking out one and walking one over 4.2 innings. Classmate Cameron Latta (Lowell, Mass.) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings, walking two and striking out one, Junior Seve Llanio (Glen Arm, Md.; 0-1) allowed one run on a hit and two walks over 1.1 innings, while sophomore Autrey Gates (Pembroke, N.H.) was tagged for six runs on four hits and a walk in his appearance. Freshman Adam Krol (Sunderland, Mass.) was charged with two runs on two hits in a walk in 0.1 innings and Williams pitched the final 0.1, allowing just a hit.

Carpenter (two RBI) and Hayden (RBI, run) were both 2-for-3, while Morrisino was 2-for-4.

Anthony Perry started for Assumption and allowed just two runs – one earned – on six hits, while walking two and striking out two over 7.0 innings.
